We switched hotels a couple hours after checking in. Even though there were many issues, I’ll narrow it down to the big one. Our shower was only capable of delivering scalding hot water. We called down to the desk at 7:40pm and asked for maintenance, they said there’s no maintenance. How is there no maintenance person? The front desk clerk then proceeded to lecture us on how to turn shower knobs. We know how to turn shower knobs, it’s broken. She then said she’d send housekeeping. We waited over 20 minutes, no one came. The correct answer when a customer calls is “I will send someone to your room to assist you,” not “you must not know how to operate the shower.” Then you actually send someone to assist. Based on all the other things, including the elevator that got us stuck when we tried to go to the pool, we decided to check out. The staff at the front desk was rude again, and argued with us that all hotels don’t have maintenance this time of the night (not true). It was 8:30pm, not 4:00am. So, according to them we were wrong to expect maintenance for our room. The F&B manager was also serving as the hotel duty manager, and we had to wait for him to come over from a restaurant. We asked when does maintenance leave for the night, he said 8:00pm. The front desk clerk told him they left early that day. At that point, the F&B manager offered to get us a different room, but we already had our bags packed ready to go. I did not want to pay money to stay in a hotel with rude front desk staff. This hotel is not maintaining the property or properly staffing. Its staff also needs training on customer service. Considering the amount of money they charge and they want to be a five star hotel, this is unacceptable.

Beware of prices excluding VAT!!!

Beware the hotel qoutes prices in the restaurant excluding vat and a mandatory service charge - so you will pay 26% more than what the menu says - very sharp practice , I was very annoyed!

We stayed for one night to celebrate our anniversary; my husband and I got married in Carton House and usually come back on our anniversary but this was our first stay in 2 years and unfortunately we were disappointed by some of the changes made to the hotel. After the hotel reopened in 2021, breakfast was served in the beautiful Morrison Room which was so enjoyable with the beautiful surrounds and view of the gardens. I believe on our last stay breakfast may have been in Kathleen’s kitchen which was also nice, but it has now been moved to the Carriage House which we feel is a huge downgrade in the breakfast experience. Having to walk across a freezing cold courtyard in the morning before queuing in a cold corridor for breakfast was less than ideal. The hot food is buffet only, the only thing available cooked to order is an omelette or vegan breakfast, no pancakes, French toast, eggs Benedict, etc. which you would expect in a 5 star hotel. You might also expect all coffees to be included but alas no, anything other than black coffee in a pot incurs an extra charge! The buffet food is served from pans with loose lids so you need one hand to open the lid, another hand to dish out the food and a third hand to hold your plate as there is nowhere to put it down! So then naturally people take the lids off the pans and leave them off and the food goes cold. Sausages were nice but rashers were rock hard and stone cold. The GF toaster was beside the hot food so people were using it for non GF toast, a huge food safety issue for anyone who is coeliac. We had nice sandwiches in the bar for lunch but service was very slow. Dinner in the Carriage House was very good. We mentioned our anniversary at check in and usually something small is left in our room, like macarons and a card or something, but this year there was nothing. I know it’s not obligatory but it was a change we noted nonetheless. Overall, we feel that the level of service is not what it once was and the breakfast experience alone was enough to turn us off returning which is sad since Carton House holds such wonderful memories for us.

First time visiting for an overnight stay. A fantastic hotel and beautiful building in a wonderful quiet setting. This is a proper five-star hotel, yet the staff strike the perfect balance between professionalism and friendliness. The room was spacious and perfect in every way, the bed in particular supremely comfortable with fantastic linen. We enjoyed the swimming pool area which was lovely. I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to anybody looking for some pampering in a fantastic setting. The only thing that fell short in my opinion was the red walkway down by the river was muddy with poor drainage in parts. You would expect this to be properly drained so guests could walk there without destroying their shoes.

Seth from the whiskey library is an amazing Barman and manager so kind and knowledgeable. 10/10 service. Would highly recommend.
