I chose Peppers Blue on Blue expecting a premium resort experience, but unfortunately it fell well short of expectations, especially at around $630 per night for a two-bedroom apartment. The location is beautiful, but the resort itself feels tired and dated. The rooms look run down, the restaurant furniture feels like something from the mid-2000s, and the fake flowers on the restaurant tables do little to create the premium atmosphere you would expect from one of Magnetic Island’s premier resorts. The accommodation was the biggest disappointment. We booked a two-bedroom apartment and were surprised to discover that only one of the two bedrooms had air conditioning. To make matters worse, the air conditioner in the only bedroom that had one wasn’t working. A lovely maintenance staff member attended and installed a portable air conditioner, but because it had to vent outside, glass louvres were removed. Our room faced the main road near the ferry terminal, so from around 6:00 am the room was exposed to bus and traffic noise. The temporary solution left us choosing between a hot room and a noisy one. What disappointed me most was the complete lack of ownership from reception or management. Once it was clear there was no alternative room available, I would have expected someone to apologise, check on us or offer some form of goodwill gesture. None of that happened. I also find it astonishing that a two-bedroom apartment in North Queensland at this price point only has air conditioning in one bedroom. That should be made very clear before guests book. The accommodation buildings also have no lifts. Luggage trolleys are available, but there is no concierge assistance, so guests are left carrying their own luggage up multiple flights of stairs. Service at the Boardwalk Restaurant and Bar was disappointing. I phoned to ask what snacks were available because the menu wasn’t online. Rather than simply reading out the handful of options, I was told I’d be better off coming down to look at the menu myself. Food and drink service was consistently slow, the beer selection was surprisingly limited for a waterfront venue in North Queensland, and the complimentary breakfast was extremely basic. I have honestly experienced better breakfast selections at mining camps. The television in our apartment was also visibly damaged, with coloured vertical lines down the right-hand side of the screen and a damaged patch in the lower corner. Even checkout was unnecessarily inconvenient, requiring guests to exit the secure car park first before parking again and walking back to reception to return the room and access cards. The one positive was being allowed to check in early because our room was ready, and I genuinely appreciated that. Overall, this simply did not feel like a $630-per-night resort. The individual issues may seem small in isolation, but together they created the impression that the guest experience was not the priority. At this price point, I expected much better accommodation, service and attention to detail. Instead, I left feeling disappointed and would not stay here again.
