The rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. The hotel location was near the beach and shopping center, which was nice. Shops and restaurants within the hotel were convenient as well, though pricey. Staff were friendly and answered all the questions I had. I would just say to make sure your employees are knowledgeable about your emergency plans and what the generators can and cannot power. It's not the hotel's fault that there was a power outage due to Hurricane Lala, but we had to walk down 16 floors of stairs with our luggage and one of our group experiences chronic pain in her knees, hips, and back. Stair chairs would be a great way to get people out who can't walk down that many stairs.

Due to the effects of Hurricane Lala, the Ala Moana Hotel lost power at approximately 9:30 AM. The hotel made an announcement over the intercom advising guests to remain in their rooms unless there was an emergency and stating that elevator use would be very limited. When it was time for us to leave for the airport, we packed our belongings and left our room on the 17th floor to find a working elevator. However, there were no signs or instructions at the elevator banks, the elevators were not illuminated, and we could not hear or determine whether they were operating. With no clear information, we and other hotel guests chose to use the stairs. We walked down more than 17 flights of stairs. Unfortunately, there were no signs or directions in the stairwell indicating where the lobby or hotel exit was located. We eventually exited the stairwell outside, behind the hotel near the hotel dock. There were numerous housekeeping employees gathered in that area. After getting our bearings, we walked around the block to the front lobby. There was still no power, so hotel staff took my name and we left. We later encountered a hotel employee who was directing guests. We explained that there should be signs in the stairwell directing guests to the lobby because it was impossible to know which floor or exit to use. She responded that guests were not supposed to use the stairs and should have called the front desk to have an elevator sent to our floor. This response was frustrating because there was no way for us to know that procedure. The hotel had no power, the room phones were not working, there were no signs at the elevator banks, and there were no instructions in the stairwells explaining what guests should do or who they should contact using a cell phone. There were also no announcements explaining how guests were supposed to safely exit the hotel if they needed to check out. Given the number of housekeeping employees who were gathered around the back of the hotel, it seemed that staff could have been assigned to provide directions or place temporary signs throughout the hotel. Overall, the experience gave us the impression that the hotel was not adequately prepared to manage a prolonged power outage or clearly communicate evacuation and exit procedures to its guests.
