A wonderful getaway with my fiancée. Our experience at Banyan Tree Shanghai On The Bund was truly unforgettable, thanks to the exceptional service. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond. The staff that welcomed us and walked us through our room, gave a detailed introduction to its features and ensure we knew where everything located. When we could not find our WIFI login details, she responded quickly and responsibly, ensuring we had everything we needed. The level of care and attention to details was impressive. The room itself was spacious, with a comfortable bed and well maintained interior. It felt like every detail was thoughtfully prepared to make our stay as relaxing as possible. Breakfast was another highlight. There was a great variety, from western options to Chinese dishes included waffle, pastries, noodle, egg station and more. We especially enjoyed the Greek Yogurt. Bayan Tree Shanghai On the Bund continues to impress us with its warm hospitality, comfortable rooms and excellent service. We highly recommend this place for anyone visiting for Shanghai.

The hotel is in a great location and the staff all very friendly. I particularly want to mention Michael the concierge and his colleagues Tony and Jeremy who were so helpful both before and throughout our stay. Great breakfast. Rooms comfortable.

Second-tier hotel masquerading as a first-tier one

Laughably unprofessional service at a self-styled ‘high-end’ hotel. I booked and paid for two rooms for some friends. The front desk tried to push an upsell by repeatedly stressing in front of the guests that ‘the rooms they are getting do not have the best view of the Bund’, despite at least two very firm declines. The front desk lady’s determination to embarrass the client for commission was admirable. The front desk lady also seemed to have trouble accepting that a woman was handling the reservation. Even though I was the one making the reservation, putting down my card, and asking her the questions, she addressed all of her answers to my husband and would not look at me. I have rarely encountered such blatant misogyny in China. The hotel’s location is okay, but it is also at least a few miles away from the actual Bund. The facilities are not in the best of conditions – the pool is closed starting 21 May for maintenance, and almost half of the light switches in one of the rooms were faulty. Overall, the hotel is not really comparable with similarly priced ones in the same or better locations. They charge a premium for the facade of a ‘high-end hotel’, but they do not appear to have the service and amenities to match.

We shall certainly pay more attention on how we interact with our guests upon check-in and choose a more discrete and appropriate way of communication when it comes to recommendations of added value or services. Additional training of our team members on this subject is required and will be arranged. I am also taking note of your comment in regards to the faulty light switches to ensure those are getting repaired immediately. Unfortunately we were not able to avoid the one week closure of our pool facilities due to urgent repair & maintenance work in order to ensure a great experience for our guests in a well maintained environment. I sincerely hope your experience with us will not prevent you from choosing us again in the near future and I look forward to welcoming you back for your next trip to Shanghai. The Banyan Tree group have a long standing reputation of excellence and high standards throughout Asia, which is the main reason why I wanted to try this one as it was ranked one of the very best in Shanghai. The location is excellent, right on the Bund and very peaceful and serene and the hotel beautifully presented, and the front desk staff excellent - although I was surprised to Fi over that only two or three staff could speak confidently in English. This was surprising for a group such as the Banyan Tree, with the pedigree and reputation they have worldwide. This did make communication somewhat challenging for me, although luckily, Alisa at front desk was an outstanding member of staff who helped me throughout. The Bund Retreat rooms really are special, beautifully appointed, spacious, outstanding views and a wonderful circular bath by the window. Unfortunately, my room on the first night had a problem with the air-conditioning, and the heating was super hot, which meant I could not sleep, clearly not ideal for my hotel of the standing. Alisa did not hesitate to move me the next day so my second night sleep was better! Overall, I enjoyed my stay, and it felt very luxurious, I hope they sort out the air-conditioning and all rooms moving forward.
