Review: The Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery by Sofitel First of all, I want to thank the staff for their efforts. Everyone genuinely tried to do a good job, and I would especially like to mention the room attendants, May and Sunil, who did excellent work. The cleanliness, spaciousness and size of the rooms are definitely positive points, as are the location and direct beach access, with plenty of sunbeds available. Unfortunately, this is where my positive impression ends. Only the room rate at this hotel lives up to five star standards; the food certainly does not. The breakfast buffet is still the stronger part of the culinary offering: good variety and attentive service. However, the quality of the dinner buffet is not worthy of a five star hotel. It is largely dominated by long cooked meat dishes in various forms. There are vegetarian and fish options, though the fish is mostly served as stew like dishes. The layout of the buffet often feels illogical: meat and vegetarian dishes at the start, then desserts in the middle, only to circle back to more meat and vegetarian dishes around the corner. There is a daily special that can be ordered at a counter and brought to the table, or at least should be. On one occasion, the dish I ordered simply never arrived. The dinner staff often appeared overwhelmed and did not display anything close to five star composure or confidence. The price and performance ratio is not convincing at all. At roughly 340 euros per night for two people including half board, the hotel must deliver more, especially when it comes to the food. Guests willing to pay such rates will quickly start looking at other hotels and destinations. All in all, mainly because of the price, the stay was a disappointment, unfortunate especially for the hardworking team on site. And by the way, the name by Sofitel does not appear anywhere at the hotel itself, only during the booking process. I doubt that is a coincidence.

After staying 3 days in downtown Dubai, we wanted a couple of days of rest before returning home. We picked the The Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery By Sofitel, opting for a Premium room. When we made the booking, we specifically requested a room as high up as possible. This was to ensure an experience as quiet and restful as possible. Upon arrival, we we're informed that we had been upgraded to a suite free of charge. They put us in room 117. The room itself is lovely, but also much more than we needed as a couple. We had no initial hesitations, as the room was away from the construction work going on at the opposite side of the building. Returning to our room after a few hours at the beach, we realized that the room was not great at all. It was directly above the restaurant, the balcony was filled with noise and food smell. The balcony was also only a few meters away from the beach promenade which was lit with bright LED light the entire evening. This was topped off by the blend of music from the pool bar and one of the restaurants (which did not mix well) I went to the reception to enquire about a room change. Naturally, nothing was available on a higher floor that day, but we could change the next day. They also promised that the promenade lights would be turned off at midnight, which they weren't. The next day we are woken up by restaurant staff at 06:00 am. The staff is having loud discussions directly beneath our balcony. After that, they start moving tables and chairs around, dragging them across the floor. The noise level was unacceptable, showing no respect for their guests trying to sleep. Around 10:00 am they confirm that we will be moved to another room when it was ready. Only after two hours, when I ask when this will happen, they tell me that the room should be available around 15:00. My bad, I guess, since I did not ask earlier. As a consequence, we spend most of our only full day here in limbo. (staying two nights, and leave early in the morning for the airport on departure day) Other than "I understand, sir", nothing was offered as way of apology. While I realize that requests cannot be guaranteed, I seriously doubt that all people who booked that room category had specifically requested a upper level floor. When making a specific request, you expect a hotel of this standard to make an effort to accommodate, not doing the exact opposite. When you ask for a cup of coffee, getting 10 gallons of water is not an upgrade. The hotel itself is lovely. The staff, while facilitating a room change, did only the absolute minimum and nothing more, showed no understanding of why we had a problem, and seemed not to care at all.
