Smooth check in. Comfortable room although it seemed on a bit of a slope. Clean yet compact but served the purpose. Conveniently situated in the centre of town and breakfast was lovely. If being picky there was no socket for charging phone beside bed.

The room was elegant with tremendously high ceilings and beautiful trim everywhere. The window in our room was massive and faced the street which made for a lovely view. Four levels up go the winding wide stairs. There is a general ambiance of royalty. Staff were always cheerful and immediately helpful in any situation. Being from the States means I struggled with the light switches because of how things are wired in the UK. Little things that were not working well in the room were the mini fridge and the remote control for the TV. The arrangement of the rooms and the restaurant area is perfect: coming down stairs leads to the front desk and the entrance to the dining area in a way that is welcoming and comfortable. The delicious breakfast of sunny side up eggs, haggis, beans, etc. is set out in a room tucked in the back through the pub area. The food is not in the same area where you eat. There are plenty of tables and they will arrange them for your group in areas with less traffic. It’s hard to explain you just have to be there.

Friendly staff and comfy room! Tasty steak meal in Bistro! Nice Xmas decorations too! Central location. Excellent value at £71 Inc breakfast! Slightly disappointed to be told had to leave breakfast room before 10am for staff to have theirs

Unknown Man Entering My Room When In Bed.

At 6:30am a man knocked on my door, which sounded like the receptionist & entered straight away, with a key to my room unannounced, I shouted "WOAH!!!" he followed to say "oh sorry" and left straight away. He did this to another room down the corridor 5 seconds later, I creeped over to my door to hear if he went into another room after maybe mistaking mine. He knocked on another door, I heard a door open & he said "Ohh Sorry" again. After complaining about this matter - as I'm a young female alone in a hotel room, someone knocking on my door at 6:30am never mind being able to access my room without a "hello, come in" or "who is it", is extremely unsettling. After complaining, the matter was then explained by the hotel manager stating that there was a noise complaint & that the man had announced himself before entering my room... 1st of all there was no noise - im a very light sleeper 2nd of all even if there was a noise complain you dont walk straight into someones room! I thought for a second someone had gotten the wrong room & out of coincidence he had gotten access to my room with a similar key card. However he then went and did it down the hall to someone else. I then knew it must have been the receptionist. Lets say a neighbour in a flat was making noise at 6:30am, would you knock & walk straight into their home. No you would knock wait for someone to come to the door & you would speak to them. I was extremely upset when management made up some nonsense of a noise complaint when really I think a staff member was checking for rooms to sleep in after his nightshift. Its extremely disgraceful & hopefully this raises awareness for Mercure staff member to either get trained properly, get their key systems working so multiple keys dont work for the same rooms (if they are covering up some drunk wondered) OR fire the member of staff if he was looking for a place to sleep. I want to raise awareness for this not to happen again but the fact that it happened twice within 10seconds... I appreaciate the offer of a refund however I'd rather raise awareness because if that was a drunk man that walked into my room at 6:30am when im asleep & any incident were to occur due to the lack of security, this would 1000% get more coverage than just your tripadvisor review! Get your staff trained!! I'll forever take a door wedge to every single hotel now because of that morning.

I’ve just spent 3 nights here while visiting my daughter who is studying at Aberdeen university. The location of the hotel is excellent on Union terrace gardens with easy transport links, food etc and you can walk easily to many places which was handy. The room I had was ok, it was comfortable but very basic. I was horrified though by the state of the drawers in the room, so dirty and worn out. I normally like to unpacked when I’m travelling but I had to live out of a suitcase this trip. I’ll post photos. The furniture is chipped and bathroom tiles chipped and worn. Service was ok and staff are friendly. My tv remote wasn’t working the first night and got sorted pretty quickly. There were tea and coffee and a kettle in the room which was handy after being out in the cold. On the second day there was no replacement of teabags but I was lucky I had my own so just used that. This is more of a 3 star hotel. I recently stayed at a 4 star Mercure in Hannover which was so much better than this.
