Disappointed and mislead

On arrival our room was not ready, but when allocated it was nothing like the room on the web listing. The Classic room on the listing was modern, spacious, had a walk in shower and Illy coffee machine. Our room was small, pokey and had neither the walk in shower or Illy coffee machine. The room was large enough for one person and dated. I had to ask reception for some toilet roll and told the lady on reception that it wasn,t the room on the web page and didn't have the coffee machine. She said it was a Classic room and they don't have coffee machines. I showed her the listing and she just said I will tell my manager because that is wrong. The restaurant was not open and the bar was pretty poor. Apart from the reception area the rest of the hotel was pretty tired. If I had known this beforehand I would not have booked this hotel.

Two Night Stay

We booked sea view room and had fabulous weather, so was justified. However, thought we woke to a sea mist, but this was due to the windows needing a clean! It was 2nd floor, so possibly a problem. Hotel had lovely character. Due to Covid, our room was not made up. Not an issue, except we ran out of bathroom items very quickly. Would have been nice if they told us when checking in, or left double amount in the room. Position is a slow 25 minute walk from the station and right by the BA tower, which was excellent for us. Room was small and did not have any drawers, so could be an issue for longer stays, but was comfortable and we slept well. Lovely walk-in shower, but water was slow to drain. Overall enjoyed our stay and would return.

The staff throughout our stay were very friendly and accommodating. The room was comfortable and perfect for a night in Brighton. I would have loved to spend time in the hotel's bar but understandably it is currently closed. Luckily though the hotel is just a short stroll away from everything Brighton has to offer.

Having stayed at other Mercure hotels elsewhere and enjoyed the experience, frankly I will not be staying again. The room was small, basic with no draw space whatsoever for clothes. I asked for another bigger room with a bath, none was forthcoming - a seafront upgrade was offered at an extra £40 a night. I didn’t actually care about the view, just a comfortable room. There was a leak from the bathroom basin which came out to the ‘hall’ which was bubbling the wallpaper and seeping out onto the carpet. Outside the common space to the rooms beyond the entrance was in need of maintenance with common parts dirty. The breakfasts were very basic indeed and a very low standard. The only saving grace was the breakfast staff who were very obliging and courteous within the constraints they were functioning. All round a very poor low quality experience which I will not be repeating.

Great location of the hotel. It was renovated around 1 year ago and it has now a nice decoration. Breakfast though is one of the worse I had in years, very limited, poor quality and no replacement of food when this is finished. Customer service isn't very good either. You can tell that this hotel is not run by Accor but by an outsourced company. They need to invest more in people and improve the breakfast.

Stayed here for a weekend trip to Brighton, location perfect for visiting all the attractions. Stayed In a Mews room on the second floor. Bed was huge and very comfortable, tea making facilities good and the gift of chocolates a nice welcoming touch. Water pressure in the bathroom was poor and height of wash basin and toilet too low for normal adults and would have been an issue if we were staying longer. Breakfast was fantastic with a huge selection to suit everyone and topped up regularly. However, time it wrong and you will have to queue to get a table as the room is small and doesn’t seat large amounts of guests in a sitting. Ambience of hotel is good and most of the staff pleasant and helpful. Would stay again

Very fast check in and check out served by Mr Shameen. He also upgrade my room automatically cause i am accor gold member. Good service!! Close to croydon centre, but a bit far to london. Bus stop in front of the hotel. Overall i satisfy with this hotel and i will stay again when i come to UK.

Stayed at this most wonderful old style hotel, every aspect of this stay was outstanding. The moment you walk into the lobby you feel you are somewhere special. The view every morning from the superior room at the front is amazing. We were lucky to have good weather given it is late Autumn.

Except dinner in restaurant which was Moules marinière which were cold and rubbery unable to complain to waiter as he was on his own and very busy- Breakfast was okay but also luke warm sad really xxx

Exceptional Stay...WOW....this hotel has had a facelift and then some....l cannot speak highly enough of this hotel...it's breathtaking.... fantastic views.....great rooms...great service...great food...great staff, they go above and beyond to make you feel special...SO comfortable beds and pillows....just a great stay...Thank You...a stay to remember....

Beautiful room and excellent staff. Bathroom was particularly good. The breakfast was good, buffet style but good quality, even if the Ballroom is rather old and away from the sea view. Parking was fine but expensive( as all parking in Brighton) at £18. The decor is'individual' but very appealing.Reception was excellent

We always stay here so it feels like home, although on a much more grander scale. The new style looks luxurious - although it still maintains its sense of history. We will be back to enjoy the escape, the breakfast and the Westpier.

Response to formal complaint awaited. Room provided was unfit for purpose. This was perhaps the worst value for money I have experienced in a lifetime of travel. My previous experience of Mercure hotels had been good.

Thank you for your review after your recent stay at the hotel and I apologise we did not meet your expectations. I do not have any formal complaint that has been sent to me at this time. I have responded to your survey after your stay and apologised that you found the room to hot. Unfortunately our classic rooms do not have air conditioning. You also mentioned that the electrical socket needed checking which has been forwarded to our maintenance team to check and resolve any issue. Once again I apologise that we did not meet your expectations.

The hotel looks great post refurb. The staff were most helpful. We were getting married elsewhere just outside of Brighton but wanted a central and affordable spot within most budgets. The Mercure was perfect for that. I paid more to book a larger room and had to move a couple of times after getting no sleep the 1st night due to noise from the seafront and other rooms. The windows offer very little protection from traffic and the walls from other rooms. Once we moved to the same room 4th floor it was great. This hotel says it is accessible. An accessible room was booked and confirmed months in advance for my brother who is in a wheelchair. He ended up on the 4th floor in a non accessible room because there was an issue with the lift from reception to the accessible rooms. He also ate breakfast alone one morning because there was no lift to the breakfast room from reception. The other days he managed to walk up the few stairs with help from friends and the staff assisted and carried his chair up. Had my brother been unable to walk a few steps without support this wouldn't have been possible. It seems that the lift to the accessible rooms had been having issues for a number of weeks. For anyone with access issues, stay elsewhere. If you want a hotel that is decent value with enough rooms for a big group then this is a good option with good staff. ( we had approx 20 rooms/ 40 people).

Looking at your group there was no accessible room booked or a request for an accessible room on the bookings. If you let me know the name the accessible room was booked under I can look further. Your comments regarding the team are appreciated and are a great asset to the hotel. The hotel is a grade 2 listed building so unfortunately we cannot double glaze the windows to reduce any traffic noise. I am sorry other inconsiderate guests disturbed your sleep.

Good seafront hotel for overnight stay in Brighton. Had a very nice modern Mews room which was clean and spacious. Had a good breakfast though the service was a little disorganised (maybe not enough staff?) and apart from that, a very nice hotel.

Only stayed for one night but would definitely return for longer. Staff were very welcoming and our room was excellent and had a good nights sleep with a comfortable bed and pillows. The hotel is only a short, approx. 10 minute walk along the Promenade to the main centre of Brighton with a range of excellent shops and restaurants particularly in The Lanes. We decided to eat in the hotel and were not disappointed. Again, very friendly staff and the meal was first class. A good breakfast with a good choice and then away again. A recommended hotel for sure.

Thanks for the 100% great that you enjoyed your stay along the facilities at the hotel and your meals in the hotel. The staff are a great asset to the business and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Hopefully for a longer stay the next time.

I stayed at the hotel last weekend and have to say I was a bit disappointed it’s not what I would class as 4 * Check-in took an unnecessarily long time as there was only one girl on reception and five people in front of us this seemed to be the case at all times of the day. Our room was small but very clean, our problem was it was unbearably hot there was no air-conditioning and a only a small fan was supplied which was completely useless.

The hotel has various sizes of rooms depending on the category of room booked. Currently we do not advertise air conditioning however this facility will be available in our premium room within the next week. Hopefully you will return and experience a premium room with air conditioning.

Less selection of Breakfast from experience I have with Accor Group. The breakfast room is a bit like normal food café while outside in the lobby or other dinning rooms are more beautiful and warm environment. Hallway for walking to the mews rooms area does not look as level of Accor standard. Lift was out of service for many days. I has ask for more bath gel due to I stayed with my son. Never get it right. Always had to go down and pick it up myself in the evening when I came back. Staff are nice and welcome, especially at the Breakfast time.

Thank you for your comments and I am sorry we did not meet your expectations. Great that the staff look after you. We use the Ballroom for breakfast when the hotel is busy. The restaurant seats 40 people so we would have queues if we used this room for breakfast. I apologise about the lift and that you had to collect additional bath gel. Hopefully you will come back and give us a second chance when you next require accommodation when in Brighton.
