Missed the breakfast the first morning of mine and my boyfriend’s stay but staff still accommodated well. Second morning we woke up in time and it didn’t disappoint! He had full English and it was cooked very well and filled him up so much we fell back asleep in our room afterwards. The view from our window upstairs is lovely and you can see miles away. All the staff team were lovely and made us feel incredibly welcome.

The worst Mercure I've ever experienced

I'll start with the positives: nice countryside location, the staff were all really friendly and the bed was large and comfortable. Unfortunately, that's about it! I stay in Accor Group hotels almost every week, including other Mercure hotels across the UK and elsewhere in the world. I'm generally surprised Mercure are happy to have their brand attached to this hotel. On our walk along the corridor to our room on arrival, we could tell immediately what lay ahead of us in our room. The corridors and stairwell felt like something from a 1980s youth hostel. Grubby carpets and tired decor. It was also sweltering in the summer heat. But not to worry, surely our room in a 4 star hotel would be air conditioned... Nope! It was even hotter in the room. No air conditioning. The window had been left open by housekeeping but it didn't make much difference. There was a small fan but that didn't help much either. The furniture in the room was definitely from the 1980s and I'm not sure the carpet had been changed since then either. The bathroom was terrible for a 4 star hotel and in need of a long overdue refurbishment. Cheap grubby linoleum on the floor. Rusted dirty taps. Tiles from the 1980s (again!) and even the ceiling needed painted. Dirty marks on the carpets. Flaking paint on the door. No sockets next to the bed for charging phones. And no fridge! I honestly wish we'd gone with a Premier Inn. It would have been better than this! We just stayed in a Premier Plus room at a Premier Inn for a few days before this Mercure and it was considerably better. Breakfast was okay. Not a very good selection of fruit and cold options. The cereals and breads were all processed junk food rather than nice healthy unprocessed muesli or anything like that. Cooked options were okay. Coffee was pretty decent for a bean to cup machine. We did stand around waiting for 5 mins to be seated at breakfast with no staff members in sight but once they did arrive, the lady who served us was very nice and friendly. Overall, can't fault the staff we met and perhaps we got unlucky with our room but it was supposedly a "privilege" room, so I'd hate to think what a standard room looks like. Also did not get my usual Accor Gold Member room upgrade. That's not a problem as I know they are not guaranteed but the hotel was clearly not busy so I'm not sure why I was not upgraded. Perhaps if I had been, I'd have seen a better standard of room. Unless this place invests heavily in refurbishing these rooms, I couldn't possibly recommend it. The only reason I've not given it 1 star is because the staff were good.

Poor check in setting the scene, reception wanted to charge me the wrong rate n my way to my room the place is looking tired and even worse no internet……… Shocking in this day and age needed to complete some work and get it issued so that’s a big fat no! Sorry sir we have somebody working on it, no offer of compensation just more lies. Disappointing from a leading hotel brand you have to do better if you want to keep charging these rates!

Excellent 3 course meal and service. Wasn’t staying in the hotel but just went to the restaurant. Special mention to Chloe and Charlotte in the restaurant for their attentiveness and Shae for the welcome on reception. Would definitely visit again.

We stay in Mecures regularly but this is one of the best. Set in beautiful grounds and lovely feeling about it. The food at dinner and breakfast was outstanding and lots of choice. We’ve never met such friendly and helpful staff. Special mention to Harriet and Anastasia in dining rooms they were great. I use a wheelchair and staff always willing to help. Our assistance room was huge and well equipped. Only comment not criticism please state on your brochures that there are no lifts in hotel to bedrooms. A relative came to stay one night and in their 80s found stairs to their room tricky. Again a member of staff helped them but if they’d known they could have booked a downstairs room. Well done everyone at Mercure the Grange.
