One or two points made this visit (we have been to this hotel many times) only average this time. Down points were: the room was over the front door meaning some late-night noise. It did not seem to have been vacuumed in part, if at all, because several items on the floor were present throughout our stay. The bathroom also had items on the floor and the glasses (which had seemingly replaced hygenic plastic water beakers) were not wholly clean. The good points were Reception, also the Restaurant but the latter was totally spolit on the second morning when the number of guests on a coach trip nearly overwhelmed the staff in spite of their valiant efforts. Whilst we understood the financial benefits to the hotel in having a coach party to stay, their arrival at breakfast led to very cramped and potentially dangerous overcrowding situation in the room. We have stayed in hotels where there were coach parties but these have all had separate restaurant facilities for those parties which avoided any feelings on the part of other guests that they were getting a less than average service in spite of the efforts of the staff.

This is an amazing old building with a lot of lovely features. The staff were friendly & helpful especially Nathan & blonde lady on reception. Room was small with huge window sill taking up too much space. Tired furniture & bathroom. Clean enough but did spot toe nail clippings! No fridge cheap toiletries & tea etc not refilled .pillows were the worst I have experienced!

disapointed that on my previous trip to U K, staying at this hotel, they did not found my ACCOR Silver card in their system and created a new card for which I had to make lot of action to cancel. Morever, I did not get the advantage of the ACCOR point on my silver card when I aked ACCOr to merge both cards into the silver one!

Thank you for your feedback I am sorry that we were unable to find your Card on the system. We have had a new front office system installed which is causing a few problems. If you could drop me an email with your sliver card number I will ensure that the points are on this card and update your profile with the correct card number

A very nice hotel in a beautiful setting. Lovely decor. Staff were most welcoming and helpful. Did not have an evening meal but, breakfast was lovely. All freshly prepared on a regular basis. Rooms were very quiet, especially as a wedding was taking place. Would stay again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and couldn't be more happy with it. The hotel is well located, in a nice quiet area within 4 miles of Gloucester cathedral. This time we drove in and out of the city, but when we return (& hopefully stay longer) we would probably walk as there seemed to be pavements all the way. The room was lovely - quiet, clean, spacious, lovely view over the lawns, a window that opened, a great bed & good plumbing. The food was very good. The staff were lovely. Couldn't have been better.

The hotel is a beautiful building set in its own grounds. We had a fantastic welcome from the receptionist and I'm sorry that I can't remember his name to give him a special mention. Our room was large and comfortable although the pillows were poor quality. Everything had been well cleaned with the exception of the sink plughole which had been forgotten. Breakfast was tasty and there was plenty of choice. We'd be happy to stay again.

Very pleasant stay, nice hotel with a lot of history & great location and we enjoyed our lunch in one of the garden pods. Staff very friendly, and rooms comfortable and nice hotel grounds & local walks

I booked a couple of nights as a surprise birthday treat for my wife. When we checked in my wife mentioned to the lad on reception (Nathan) that it was a surprise birthday treat. I can only say that the service we received for the entire stay was excellent and the staff could not have been better. Some great unexpected surprises and even a birthday card. We will certainly use the hotel again and have already booked another Mercure in Bournemouth in February. Great stay.

One of my favourite hotels, for its warmth, location, quietness, the kindness and attentiveness of the staff. All the rooms are comfortable, Park side views are always special whatever the time of year. Fine dining in the exclusive surroundings of a old Manor House type property. Always a pleasurable stay.

Some good aspects of this hotel: breakfast and dinner; location; some service. But some poor aspects too. Reception was unfriendly and ill-prepared: we'd booked early entry (confirmed by e/mail) but she had no record of this; we were given a room on the 3rd floor although there were no lifts and I'd been discharged from hospital that morning; the room was very cold and we were told "no heating until 4pm". Shall not stand here again.

Location lovely, welcome excellent, room average, very clean bathroom. Stay let down by evening meal and breakfast. Evening meal was very disappointing although chicken burger was OK. My meal very poor. Breakfast also very poor.

This is our third stay at this lovely hotel and we will definitely be back. You are made to feel so welcome by the friendly staff and nothing is too much trouble for them. The rooms are clean and tastefully decorated and the beds are really comfortable. The food is excellent and the waiting staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a lovely setting with beautiful grounds and is also just a short drive from Gloucester. Highly recommended!

For the price I paid, I've ha better hotels. Room is too small and no aircondition. It was late summer but it's a bit hot. Breakfast is good - usual english breakfast, cereals, fruits, tea, coffee, and pastries. No lift. Hotel is old. Our toilet was the old style of pump. You must wait until it gets full before you use it. I've stayed in Ibis and Novotel before and I couldn't complain. It's my first time with Mercure and experience was not good. So maybe I'll stick with Novotel or Ibis next time. I am going to give 5-star to staff though. They were helpful. Just hotel is not good.

A great hotel set in wonderful gardens. The staff and service was excellent. The hotel was clean tidy and in a good position close to motorway. The room was well equipped and clean. We had dinner and breakfast which was very enjoyable.

Poor or good? A mixture of both.

My wife and I are members of the Accor system and have found it pretty good. I wanted a couple of days away so we chose this hotel, especially as another Mercure Hotel closer to us received worse reviews. Problems? A few. When we arrived, 5 women who had lunched in the Hotel and who were also staying in the hotel were paying for their meals. Each one was paying their own bill. The only staff member on Reception was doing her best but continued disappearing to deal with cash and was then returning. The whole process seemed to take about 15 minutes. A poor start to our visit. When I went to pay the bill I was asked to pay an incorrect amount-far too much! Poor finish to our stay. When we went to get our drinks which should have been complimentary, the inexperienced member of staff said we were on,y entitled to a £4 reduction on the bill. Fortunately the other member of staff there was able to resolve the situation. Good things: the woman in charge of breakfasts on Thursday was excellent. The young woman serving drinks on Thursday evening was also very good. Would we return? Maybe, but not during school holidays. Too busy!

All positive from the beginning, very warm and welcoming reception staff. Excellent service during breakfast. Beautiful grounds to take a stroll after meals. The room was very spacious and a rather comfortable bed.

Broken coffee maker that threw coffee on my partner and bathroom window painted closed. Got offered £25.00 to compensate when room cost £188.00. Not acceptable. When spoke to manager I was told that the window has now been fixed but that doesn't change spoiling our weekend. I stay at lots of hotels in Gloucestershire and have never experienced anything like that before I won't return again. Mr J. Keen

Dear Mr Keen, Thank you for your review however this is not quite correct you spoke to the operations manager on Saturday night who advised you that the window in the bathroom of you room was a sash window and therefore opened from the top down not the bottom up. However you was not interested. You asked for compensation for the coffee machine apparently throwing coffee over your partners item of clothing which as a gesture of goodwill we refund £25.00 for the item to be dry cleaned. Also advised if this does not cover the cost to let me have the receipt. Your response to mine and my operations managers email was rather rude and telling us it was a joke and not to bother. So I am sorry we are unable to help you further

Set in a wonderful location our 3rd visit to this Hotel. On arrival reception explained everything required due to COVID . Bar Staff and restaurant staff most helpful . Will be returning again in the near future.

Booked this as a short break and happened to coincide with the first week after "Freedom Day". Was very concerned that the majority of staff were not wearing masks, the breakfast buffet was back and there was a general approach of "laissez faire" even though it was necessary to book times for dinner and breakfast. Appreciate mask wearing is now optional but other restaurants etc in the area were all still being suitably cautious. Also worth noting 1) the age of the building as a result of which there is no air conditioning - was unfortunate that we were there on a particularly hot week; 2) the privelege package benefit is questionable - no mini-bar so free soft drinks limited to a Nespresso machine and a couple of bottles of water!; 3) general state of disrepair - spiders' webs on windows and a layer of grime - all very dusty so not appealing when you need to open windows for ventilation. Restaurant very average for a hotel purporting to be a 4 star! In retrospect should have gone to the alternative of the MGallery in Cheltenham Staff doing their best to cope and very friendly - especially the receptionist - but not enough!

This was my second visit to the Bowden Hall, during this current lockdown period, the service was again excellent. The Reception Team are always welcoming and enthusiastic, after a long day and late in the evening, it is appreciated! They take a real pride in recognising the arriving guests, particulary regular Accor Group guests. I will be back!
