Very enjoyable stay

Stayed at the hotel for one night as a birthday treat and really enjoyed the stay. On arrival we were checked in by Abbie and a colleague who were very friendly and helpful. We stayed in the suite which was very clean and spacious. Some reviews mention the hotel being dated but we actually liked the retro character of the hotel which did not affect the quality of the stay. There was plenty of parking, the food was good and apart from the odd emergency services sirens passing on the ring road the hotel was very quiet. There was a good selection for breakfast and the staff were very polite, helpful, and enthusiastic.

I had a very pleasant business stay at this hotel. Catherine gave a warm and professional welcome, making check-in smooth and efficient. The food service was excellent, with attentive staff and good quality meals. My room was clean, comfortable, and inviting—perfect for unwinding after a busy day. Overall, a well-run hotel that made my business trip both easy and enjoyable.

Stayed here 1 night, really enjoyed it as popped into the city for lunch, nice and easy to get to and Cathrine on reception was there to help with ordering a taxi, and any other business Would stay again

Outdated, Unwelcoming, and Overrated - A Disheartening Experience

The Mercure’s 4-star rating is pure illusion — calling this place a dump would be giving it too much credit. The hotel feels trapped in a time warp, a relic from decades past still pretending to be relevant. There’s no lift in this gloomy, claustrophobic building — something the website neglects to mention, which feels deceptive at best. The décor is dreary, the atmosphere miserable, and the entire property is crying out for urgent renovation. My room was a catalogue of inconveniences. The “double bed” wasn’t a true double, the radiator stayed ice-cold all night, and the only source of warmth was a lonely portable heater dumped in the corner. To make matters worse, the bed sat on unsecured wheels, meaning I spent most of the night sliding around the room. Anyone expecting the comfort or quality of a real 4-star hotel is in for disappointment. The front-desk staff were, in my experience, indifferent at best and unwelcoming at worst. To be fair, there are two small consolations: the free parking and a breakfast that’s just about serviceable. Unfortunately, the evening meal was a complete non-event — bland, uninspired, and instantly forgettable. In short: the Mercure is tired, joyless, and woefully outdated. Its best days are long gone, and it shows. I won’t be returning — not even if you paid me to.

Dave It sounds like you caught us on a bad day or we caught you on one! Irrespective of that I am so sorry you were so disappointed. We are very much a proud 1973 purpose-built hotel with all the amenities we advertise on our website. It's true there is no lift but equally we only have two floors. We pride ourselves on fabulous food and amazing service so I am truly sorry that you did not experience my wonderful team at their best. I hope on reflection Dave you might read your review back and agree you judged us very harshly. Either way I do hope you find the "joy" you are seeking elsewhere.
