You tend to get an idea of whether your stay in a hotel will be good or bad from the moment you check in or before. Well, my experience with Novotel Kolkata was the latter, and it began the night before when I ordered a one-pound birthday cake to be collected the next day when I checked in (First Cannot). I was told they could not take my request for a one-pound cake and could only prepare a half-pound cake as I needed to order in advance. At the reception, they could not get the type of room I requested in advance (this is understandable). Then (Second Cannot) came when I went to the bar and asked for a Sangria. The barman told me they did not have one but could prepare one for me. When I tasted the sangria, it was just red wine and chopped apples tossed in (Third Cannot- they cannot make a Sangria). The (Fourth Cannot) was when I asked for a matchbox, and the answer was, "We do not have a matchbox." By this time, I was exasperated; thankfully, one kind waiter made every effort (five minutes) to get me a used matchbox. Then (Fifth Cannot) I collected my pre-ordered caked at Cafe Joy. It took 25 minutes to bring the cake, and when I asked for a paper bag, yes, the answer was, "We do not have one." As I ordered my dinner and asked for well-done grilled chicken, they served me a stiff and underdone chicken, and I ate the peripheries of the supposedly "grilled" chicken (Sixth Cannot--they cannot make a good grilled and well-done chicken). Irritated, I went to my room and ordered coconut water, which was some sour water worth 475 Rupees (Seventh Cannnot--they cannot source quality produce). The (Eighth Cannot-- they cannot maintain quality housekeeping) was when I found out that the mini fridge in my room was broken, so I asked for a replacement. They brought in a dirty and musty fridge. Ewwww!!! Picture enclosed. And finally, there was someone else's scrunchie under my bed. The staff at this premise seemed ill-groomed and nonchalant. I would not have written such a detailed review if it had been a two or three-star hotel, as I know what to expect. But if a hotel is branded as a mid-scale hotel, it ought to have standards in place and, most importantly, excellent service and attention to detail. PS: Check for the scrunchy. It might still be there.

This is my second time staying at Novotel. This time, however, I was unwell while on my work trip. What I love about Novotel was the speedy check-in, my comfortable room and all the staff who were warm, soft-spoken, and caring. I had a warm, delicious ginger tea which helped me recover by the next day. The hotel has a lovely breakfast and lunch buffet spread. Chandrani and her team, made my stay comfortable and I would recommend staying here.

Our 2-night stay at Novotel Kolkata was simply outstanding. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was impeccable. The staff went out of their way to ensure our comfort, making us feel truly welcome. The room was spacious, modern, and beautifully maintained, offering a perfect blend of luxury and coziness. I was in Novotel for a short few 14 hours. I found the hotel to be a little understaffed but that could also be because I checked in at an ungodly hour of 6 am. I would like the person responsible for tye staff to appreciate Roopayushi ( if I am getting the name wrong please check who was on duty on 28th Aug 2024 at 06.30 am) at the front desk as she was on the ball in getting me a quiet non smoking room. Parveen and Prabol Majumdar from in room dining went above and beyond to take care of me with the food and also tye following day check out at 4 am. All in all it was a good stay but again it's sometimes overcrowded and can get noisy with too many corporate culture meetings and individuals.
