A Great Stay, Excellent Staff

We can’t remember how many times we have stayed at Grand Mercure Shanghai Hongqiao since our first visit in February, 2023, the time when China just re-opened the society from its 0-COVID practice. Over a span of our stays, I am aware of the dedication of the hotel to offer more qualified product to its guests. As an Accor Platinum member, we were offered room category upgrade and generous access to the Executive Lounge as usual. The Executive Lounge is now all-day opening and offering alternative breakfast option for the premium guests of the hotel with a separate a-la-carte breakfast menu, in which Udom noodle & Bennedict Eggs are exclusive to the executive lounge guests only. Iced coffee and iced milk now are also available in the Executive Lounge, which soon becomes my favorites during the scorching summer days in Shanghai, and the Grand Mercure Shanghai Hongqiao is the few hotels that are that thoughtful in providing iced coffee and milk in the executive lounge among all the upscale hotels that Accor runs in Shanghai. Upon arrival, welcome amenities are waiting for every check-in guest at the guest room. On the desk, a welcoming letter addressing the name of the guest is a new addition to the home-like intimacy that any guest may feel like returning home after a long while. I always believe that the successful establishment of such personal attachment is key to any business if it wants to make success. Hotel is not only a matter of hard product, it’s more about the aura that every people in it make together. After all, a hotel is a business of people – for the people and by the people, and our pleasant stay with Grand Mercure Shanghai Hongqiao isn’t an exception. It is the collective efforts contributed by the staffs of the hotel that makes our experience this time be as memorable as every time before. Special thanks should be given to the Executive Lounge attendants: Holly (郭鴻玲), Luna (閆治民) and Gracie (田宇), Front Office staff HUANG Ping (黃萍), Front Desk Managers Jess (or Jessie?) and ZHOU Ping (周平), Assistant Restaurant Manager Kim LIU (劉帥), Room Service attendant Annie ZHOU (周倩), as well as the 3 chefs-in-charge: 金師傅, 馬磊and 嚴松. I am writing this review for the greatest services in my overall staying during my trip on March 28 – April 1, 2023. A very big thank you for all your staffs from room cleaning, front desk, executive lounge, and restaurant for breakfast. A very special big thanks for your concierge Staff Billy Bare and his subordinate where they attended on Thursday, March 30., 2023. I was accidentally left my phone in the bus where it was a returned route from the Intertextile tradeshow on that date. I then reported to the concierge and Billy Bare had quickly made his own judgement on what to do next. He asked me to back to my room and wait. About 30mins later, I’ve got a call from him and he told me he managed the courier to deliver me back right after. His quick responses had very impressed me as a guest and it was my pleasure to send him a big thank you for all your help. Also his team from the concierge who had helped me to make all kind of phone calls on that date. I hope that your management team will able to see this and do treasure there is a great and smart concierge staff in your team. I am once again, would like to give him a big credit for this. I was a guest staying in Room 2008 and my other teammate also staying there at Room 2005 and also one at 13th Floor. They both are the member of the Accor hotel group and also having a great experiences in Hongqiao location. Highly recommend business hotel. Hope will come back soon.

The stay was greatly enhanced by the great service at breakfast. There is a caring lady named “Lovely” who was very proactive in her service, not only with me but with all guests as I observed. This is remarkable; she was genuine and attentive, remembering the previous days beverage preferences, etc. Thank you and well done!

Een japans toilet maakt van een hotel niet direct een 5 sterren hotel!! Grand Mercure Hongqiao denkt blijkbaar van wel. Behalve de badkamer is alles in de kamer hoogst dringend aan vervanging toe. Goedkoop vinyl vloerbekleding, meubels met krassen, gerepareerd door een leerling timmerman. Het keukenblad heeft dringend een poetsbeurt nodig want alles kleeft eraan vast. Het bed is niet gemaakt voor mensen die langer zijn dan 1,9m en je hebt welgeteld 20 cm aan beide zijden om erin te kruipen. Zelfs op de 27e verdieping hoor je het lawaai van het verkeer. Op hun website wordt vermeld dat de kamers een balkon hebben. Dat klopt ongeveer 0,5 m² groot met afbladderende beplaastering en schimmel. Het avondeten op het buffet in het atrium is zelfs 20 minuten na het opengaan van het buffet als hoogstens als lauw te bestempelen. Het ontbijt kost even veel als een Mercure in Parijs 8 ik wou gebruik maken van de hotel shuttle om van Hongqiao luchthaven naar het hotel gebracht te worden. Niet doen ! Het hotel had meer dan 7 u nodig om op mijn vraag te antwoorden zodat ik in de tussentijd een gewone taxi besteld heb. Je betaalt voor de shuttle van Mercure 12 x de prijs van een gewone taxi. kortom Grand Mercure Hongqiao verdient zijn naam en het logo allesbehalve. Ik heb in Formule1-hotels geslapen die er beter uitzagen dan dit zogenaamd klassehotel.

In de eerste plaats verkeerde kamer gekregen dan geboekt, zogezegd volboekt, maar hotel was leeg deze dagen!!! Dus na mijn klacht toch nieuwe kamer gekregen. De nieuwe kamer was ijs koud, en heel moeilijk te verwarmen, airco op maximum geplaatst 30C maar het bleef koud!!! Dit is wel typish China in de winter, maar voor dit geld en 5 ster hotel had ik toch warmer verwacht.
