The room we were given did not have working aircon, the windows were screwed shut. We were given a small fan and offered a bucket of ice. It was a warm evening, the room was hot and stuffy, we struggled to sleep. Slightly ironically the cooked breakfast was cold. The hotel employees were as helpful as they could be in the circumstances. We did not enjoy our stay and will not be revisiting the Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel.

I requested a change of room because the original room reeked of cigarette smoke. Alice on reception went the extra mile for me to find me an alternative room, despite having to overcome a number of issues. I am very grateful for her kindness and problem solving ability. (Avoid room 374.)

Lovely pleasant staff , really helpful on arrival, 8th of May , lovely staff again on leaving . Room was immaculately clean and cool . Good nights sleep . One downer was the price of the Guinness . Unbelievable . Lovely hotel , and lovely location

Excellent for exploring Exeter

This is a great base from which to explore Exeter - tucked away in Southernhay, it’s only a few minutes stroll from Exeter Cathedral, the city centre and the quay. There’s (paid for) parking on site and it’s fairly quiet for a city hotel. The breakfast buffet is one of the best I’ve had, with plenty of cooked, continental and cereal options as well as a waffle station, and the lounge daytime and evening menus served us well when we didn’t fancy going far. Amenities-wise, there’s a gym and indoor pool with jacuzzi - we didn’t use these but they looked ok, although it’s a shame hotel guests have to pay an extra charge to use the pool. There’s also a 24hr grab n go snack corner by reception. The staff are friendly and I really enjoyed the little touches of Exeter in the decor. Room-wise, we had a classic family room - it was very spacious, even with the sofa bed up (we’d requested this to be made up at time of booking and this was honoured). The bathroom was lovely and very modern - the room, while fine and with everything we needed, could have done with a refresh as it looked a bit dated and tired in comparison to the bathroom and communal areas. The aircon wasn’t working while we were there - a fan had been provided and we could open the windows, so we were ok. The sofa bed wasn’t the comfiest ever but it was fine for a few nights. All in all, we had a great time staying here and would happily return if we wanted to come back to Exeter!

We came here for our 11th wedding anniversary. When we got to our room the towels were put in a bow and confetti on it. Drinks and chocolates and a welcome card for our anniversary. This means so much to us. Thank you staff and thank you brigid for the lovely welcome. We will be coming again xx
