Room 401 experience. Right opposite the elevator doors. The room is crammed with two queen beds (not king size, as the booking confirmation said). No rack for luggage. Weird room layout. The wash basin is actually outside of the bathrom, on someting like a kitchen counter that sits between the room and the bathrom entrance. That counter has no backdrop, so it's in full view of the room. There is a foldable half cupboard door above the bench that has a mirror mounted on it, but it extends only to the middle of the wash basin. At 7:30 pm, the restaurant was basically empty, but I couldn't be seated because they had no table set up and they told me there would be a 15 minute wait. How long can it take to put a fresh napkin and cutlery on a table? I asked them to deliver my meal to the room. I had the Angus steak from the grill, which was more steamed than grilled. It was served in a deep bowl. Why on earth would you serve a steak, something that needs to be cut, in a bowl instead of a flat plate??? It would have been impossible for two people to have a room service meal at a table, because it only featured a wall mounted desk and a round coffee table that was so wobbly, every drink spilled when you just looked at the table. Finally trying to get some sleep, the aircon had such a rattle to it, that it was impossible to fall asleep to its noise and I had to turn it off. Not recommended

Great location in cathedral square - central Christchurch. Rooms have great views of cathedral square and the trams. Rooms are a little older style and on the smaller side but great value for money. Parking is outside but nearby for a fee (about $30/day). A bit difficult to unload luggage in heavy rain as you can't drive right up near reception. Restaurant for dinner and breakfast were pretty good. Staff extremely helpful; late checkout (3pm) was great.

Another great stay at the Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square. I was attending a conference at Te Pae so the location was perfect. Also a quick walk to the shopping areas and the amazing Riverside food market. The view from the executive rooms over the Alps is stunning.

Very poor restaurant service and shortage of wine for 2nd time running

The hotel itself is well located and absolutely fine, although reception staff are usually either absent or very slow. This review primarily concerns the restaurant on the 1st floor. The food is, on the whole, excellent (see dessert exception below). Portions are plentiful and the dishes are tasty. We had good lamb with gnocchi, salmon, and spaghetti mains. But what lets this place down (badly) is the appalling service and management. Astonishingly, they had run out of THREE of the red wines by the glass on the menu, including ALL Cabernet Sauvignons. This left very limited choice, but there was no apology or explanation. Sadly this was not a one-off - exactly the same happened when we were here a year ago. Service was slow and sporadic, with all staff frequently absent from the floor. Then, my mother's apple crumble dessert arrived stone cold. Even though it was not even 8pm, all the waiting staff had again disappeared from the restaurant (which was barely a third full, so they weren't rushed off their feet!) I had to go to the bar to ask for it to be heated up. For some reason, they said they would remake it, but having removed the dish from the table, then discovered it was the last portion and just wanted to deduct it from the bill rather than heat it. We waited another ten minutes and it still did not return. By then, everyone else at the table had finished eating and drinking, so we cancelled it. The only gesture of apology we were offered was a free bottle of water. When I politely explained to the manager that this was really not commensurate with the various disappointments of the dinner, he looked genuinely astounded. He had no explanation or apology about the dessert, and regarding the wine merely said "We've ordered more". I'm afraid that overall, this means I would suggest avoiding this restaurant.

Stayed in this hotel for two nights. From the check in process to taking care of our needs, our experience was excellent and way different from Novotel hotels in Rotorua and Queenstown. Contacted Bradley, General Manager, Novotel Christchurch based on unacceptable customer service in other two Novotel hotels, and responded immediately assuring enjoyable experience at Cathedral Square location and introduced us to Josh, Guest Services Manager. Josh ensured we enjoy our stay and took special care to allot the room in superior floor. He made arrangement to endure the package sent by Four Point Sheraton was in our room. I had another request and contacted Front Office manager of this hotel. He ensured my request was taken care. Josh and Fabio followed with an update that my request was taken care.
