For this inveterate fan of the Sofitel brand, this hotel was a real disappointment. I had read the mixed reviews and decided that my previous experience of the brand meant that I had to give the hotel a chance, particularly as we wanted a suite with a furnished terrace to enjoy the high temperatures that sultry NYC is enjoying this September. Brand loyalty on this occasion proved a big mistake. The suite was lacking in many regards. The carpet was badly stained. The walls scuffed and marked, as was the furniture. One of the reading lights was non functioning and nearly coming off the wall. This made the room feel grubby. But the greatest disappointment was the terrace. It was dirty, strewn with cigarette butts and bottle tops from previous occupants, and to cap it all, as I got out of the shower, I found two men on our terrace on the 24th floor. Apparently they were working on the outside of the building and would be using the terrace all day as a staging point for their work. We addressed these issues with the duty manager, Yasser. He had no idea why there would be workmen in the terrace. He was apologetic and helpful and offered to send housekeeping in. The issues were more fundamental than could be resolved by the housekeeping service. The room was superficially clean but maintenance was poor and this required, we thought, a significant investment in the hotel and change of management approach to ensure that rooms are maintained and updated more regularly. We checked out after twelve hours and although the hotel gave us a 25% discount on our room stay, it did rather spoil one night of our five in NYC

I was disappointed that hotel required significant payment for late 6pm checkout although rooms were availabkle and my AllAccor status should have qualified for free late checkout.

Nine of us gathered in NYC to see Hamilton. While we expected that experience to be outstanding (and it was!), we also knew that Sofitel would not disappoint anyone, and it did not. The staff are always thoroughly on their game, highly professional, diligent, accommodating, and warmly courteous, the latter element being so important as contrasted with the cold, formal mannerly attitude too many of us adopt in our work where we regrettably do not take the time or have the intention to really invest in engaging with the person in front of us. The rooms are spotless, well-appointed, and quiet. The restaurant and bar service is timely and high caliber. You are even able to practice your French with some of the staff, who are compassionate when you come up short in pronunciation, or even run out of words. Highly recommend!
