After 3 visits to and stays at the old Cartagena the past 6 years and staying at 3 different 4- and 5-star hotels, the Sofitel Santa Clara is the absolute winner. Its beauty of design and architecture, superb personal service, superb breakfast and otherwise most delicious dinners and last but not least a large pool with spacious space around it. As for personal service, the reception manager Mr. Herman Senior was outstanding. A knowledgeable, polite and, most of all, helpful professional. Mr Senior is the ultimate hotel manager type of person. We highly recommend Sofitel Santa Clara for visitors to the old city of Cartagena.

Once a convent, this elegant property has remained Cartagena's #1 hotel for many years. While an overnight stay at $700 plus per night may be out of reach for many, a coffee or drink within the open air lushly gardened courtyard provides an open-to-the-public pleasure.

This Sofitel hotel itself is beautiful, with a lush courtyard and sunny pool area. The walled city of Cartagena is fairly small, so the location is good. We arrived a bit early and had to wait for our room. We finally got what was probably the worst room in the hotel at the far end facing a ventilation wall. They did put us in a better room on an upper floor later in the day. Service at the hotel was sometimes spotty to nonexistent, but this seems to be the case in Cartagena overall. Extra staff training could help. Overall, our stay was nice.

Service is impeccable start to finish! Wonderful stay. Beautiful property. If you want to do Columbia the right way, stay here. Columbia can be a pretty hit or miss city. It’s important you stay somewhere that is safe and secure and that guides you for everything you need.
