Still the Jewel on the Nile

Stayed here 8 times over 17 years and the service and standard is exactly the same every time we come. From the moment you arrive you enter a magical world of opulence and historical surroundings, from the superb rooms, beautiful gardens and pool to the fantastic food in the three restaurants with the 1886 maintaining its smart dress code. Room service and laundry service are outstanding. Facilities are exceptionally clean and maintained well. The Royal Bar and Garden Bar provide excellent service as do restaurant staff and all services you come into contact with. Management are always at hand to help in anyway and help provide an ambiance seldom found elsewhere. Best hotel in Luxor without a doubt, best staff and service. And a real credit to Sofitel. Thank you Winter Palace for making our stay another wonderful memory. Best wishes Mr Steve & Lyn.

Classical charm with historical elegance

The Winter Palace was a welcomed respite after a long journey from Montreal to Luxor, via Cairo. This hotel has a classical and historical elegance, and the service is outstanding. The interior design is set in the past glory of meaningful travel when quality was primary, as opposed to quantity. Overall, well maintained, the Winter Palace under the banner of Sofitel is one of the most captivating hotels we have stayed at over the years. Indeed, this is an historical building, so there a few quirks, but this only adds to the charm of the place. If you prefer modern and high-tech hotels, this is perhaps not the place for you. On the other hand, the gardens are a must see, the pool is breathtaking, and if you can spend two nights here to be fully rested before embarking on your cruise up the Nile, you will enjoy every minute of your stay. Also consider that you are less than a ten-minute walk from the Luxor Temple. Safety is very good, even when walking outside, but do be prepared to be often, very often, perhaps too often, solicited for everything and anything (e.g.: taxi, trinkets, souvenirs, boat ride, wine, etc.). If you are not interested, a respectful, but firm, “no thank you” (LA SHOKRAN, pronounced in Arabic) will usually do the trick, but if the wannabe vendor is persistent, “no, enough” (LA HALAS) will usually work… but then the most persistent will ask where you are from or which language you speak. Simply continue on your way and ignore.

Disappointing deferred maintainance

This property could be a 5/5 except for the degraded condition of the public spaces and guest rooms. With peeling and chipped paint, poorly-draining sinks, nonadjustable shower head that sprays water outside the tub and a glass divider that drains water onto the floor, a TV partially off its stand into the walkway, the guest room is a disaster in layout and condition. Public spaces featured tired and worn carpets. The breakfast buffet was extensive with pleasant surroundings. The swimming pool- a beautiful 25m lap pool and attached bathing pools- but only open 9am to sunset- please open at sunrise for those who want to lap swim.

A verdant paradise in the desert

I booked this hotel for my honeymoon vacation and I received a romantic welcome, the room was well-decorated and the concierge arranged a concise intro of the glory history of the hotel when we arrived at here. I was fond of that part. My room was old but neat, they door key wasn't a card but a real key with a heavy hieroglyph-printed bronze chain, very old-fashioned items were every where, it was like staying in the museum itself. The garden was verdant and peaceful, breakfast was good, french style buffet with various savory food. My spouse had a fever at the end of our stay, the hotel allowed us to stay in another room for free to wait for the airport pick-up after we checked out. I was so grateful that my spouse could rest and recover with such considerate treatment. I did have a great vacation there.

Beautiful grounds.

Ask for a room with a balcony. Very pretty and bigger than usual rooms. Nice service. Comfortable bed and good linens in bath. Pool. Nice restaurant. Nice bar area. Close to the Valley of the Kings. A great stay.
