Just back from a 10-day trip to Melbourne. Last stay was back in 2009 We needed a base while we attend to some family matters and IBIS served our purpose well. Clean, comfortable but no frill accommodation in a 1-bedroom apartment. Walking distance of 3 mins to the famous QV Market satisfied our catering needs. Staff helpful in a busy and popular hotel, housekeeping staff cleaned our rooms every two days also did a great job. Temp in room can be a bit cold in winter but we managed OK. Would be nice if kitchenette is equipped with more basic utensils and pots and pan instead of just a fry pan to cook with. Suggestions:-Bring kitchen scissors, serving thongs and kitchen tea towels if you are planning a longer stay

After pre-paying, I was turned away and told to find alternative acommadation at 5pm. The refund took longer than booking another hotel, and I had to pay an extra $200 for last minute accomadation. Then the staffer had the nerve to get short with me after screwing me around. I'm seriously wondering if I should lawyer up for having to scramble to find alternative housing.

Staff all very friendly and helpful but not much else.

Unfortunately wasn’t a lot of choice available in Melbourne CBD when I booked because of Air Show and Flower Show on at same time. On arrival staff were very pleasant however one member was obviously new and receiving instructions-not a problem- however did not receive any instructions on parking, just told fee is $40/day. Very limited signage in alleyway on way to park but finally found a button and parked my car. Again limited signage but discovered no lift and therefore had to carry luggage up two flights-not so easy when you are in your 70s. Apartment very dark, and on opening curtains was looking directly into a busy office in building next door. Apartment is spacious however big problems with built in ceiling air conditioner which does not work properly especially during the night when it would mysteriously jump up a few degrees above my setting. Kitchen supplies very basic. Bed was comfortable and linen and towels good. Very close to Victorian Market and an abundance of Asian restaurants everywhere. Close to public transport for short trip to CBD. Apparently breakfast restaurant shown in pictures is being renovated and breakfast is in two make shift rooms which look like a school cafeteria. Food basic cereal, juices, tea, coffee. Scrambled eggs, sausages, hash browns, bacon all just luke warm. Four ancient toasters available if you would like toast. One good appliance was the pancake machine. Push a button and there are 2 fresh pancakes. So 2 nights (1 and a half days) $500 + $80 parking + $29 breakfast. lesson learnt- look well ahead before booking and read reviews.

Each member of staff was pleasant and courteous. No complaints there. However the apartment was not adequately resourced. * A hot plate but not a single cooking utensil. No pots no frypan etc. * A microwave but no microwave dishes. * A cutting board but not a single kitchen knife or bread knife. * No tea towel * No toilet brush - had to call housekeeping if the toilet needed to be cleaned. We booked the apartment for a week with a view to self-cater some of the time. It was advertised as though self-catering was possible. It was not. We contacted reception to ask for the basic requirements. Housekeeping came and we were told they would have to put in a special request .., but nothing came. Very disappointing customer service. It really felt like everything was done on the cheap.

The IBIS is a reasonable 3 star accommodation option centrally located in Melbourne CBD. Close proximity to trams in either Swanston or Elizabeth Sts, many good eateries nearby, including Queen Victoria Market. Walkable distance to Bourke St mall (about 1 km). Woolworths and IGA nearby. The 2 bedroom apartment was in ok condition. The bathroom had been more recently updated, whilst the remainder of the apartment was a little tired looking (stain on sofa and walls, old window drapes) however overall it was acceptably clean and functional. Room was serviced every day. Improvements in the living area would be better lighting and a larger TV. Buffet breakfast provided a decent selection of the basics (hot items, fruit, yogurt, cereal and bread). All staff were friendly and helpful, and more welcoming than staff at so called higher rated hotels in Melbourne we have recently stayed in.
