Unsafe - men entering the room without permission

We were two female travellers staying in separate rooms at the Mercure Hotel Den Haag, and our experience was deeply unsettling from start to finish. On the day of check-in, there appeared to be faeces on the carpet of our room. Within a minute of being inside, we went downstairs to report it. The blonde-haired woman at the front desk claimed there was “nothing on the carpet” when she had been there that morning — effectively insinuating that we had defecated on it ourselves. Moments later, she changed her story and said she had seen something but believed it to be “burn marks.” This contradiction, coupled with her insinuation, was offensive and humiliating. Later during the stay, we faced an even more distressing situation. One morning, three maintenance men came to my room, knocking three separate times despite being told “no.” When I opened the door, they said they wanted to come in to “take pictures of the room.” I refused, but they insisted it “wouldn’t take long” and would not take no for an answer until I shut the door on them. Just 90 minutes later, in the other room, a maintenance man entered without knocking while I had just gotten out of the shower. Even though I screamed “no,” he proceeded to enter anyway. I went down to reception in tears, shaken and traumatised, only to find him sitting behind us staring and smirking. He was not asked to leave and gave no apology. The manager admitted that my room had mistakenly been marked as “vacant” in their system, but could not explain why the maintenance man entered at all, as no works had been planned. He said an “investigation” would need to be done. Throughout this ordeal, the blonde-haired woman at the front desk was extremely rude and unprofessional. She laughed during the situation, showed no empathy, and had to be asked by the manager to leave the desk because of her behaviour. As female guests, we felt unsafe, disrespected, and completely unprotected by hotel staff. This was not just poor service — it was a serious violation of guest safety and privacy. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone whatsoever — especially women and especially solo female travellers. There are much better and safer options in The Hague, such as the Marriott Hotel. We are still awaiting our refund and have chased the hotel for this and I’ve had no response

It was good, maybe littlebit bigger differentiation in breakfast would be better. I still don't see a points added to my loyalty account though :(

The hotel is a fairly easy walk from the railway station. It is in quite a central location close to shops, restaurants and bars. We had a room on the 10th floor with good views over the city. The room was spacious and quiet. I was also very grateful that it had a bath as well as a shower. The staff were pleasant, it was a good practical choice in Den Haag. Our only improvement suggestion would be to keep the bar open until later, 11 pm is a bit soon particularly for international visitors.

Pros: Very centrally located: 10 minutes walk from central station, 5-10 minutes to the main city centre Nice, quite spacious room with a nice view. Bed was OK Large flat screen TV Huge shower, and with a view Complimentary breakfast delivery to the room – however, se cons… Fridge Cons: Breakfast room service: Day 1, filled out the form and delivered personally to staff at the reception. They messed it up, and no breakfast came next morning. Day 2, this time an absolutely enormous breakfast was delivered to the room – great. There was, however, no butter, jam or juice as advertised, and they were a little late. Day 3 – another enormous breakfast (which is nothing to complain about, really), but once again they were a little late, and this time lacking juice and milk for the coffee. If you choose not to have delivery to the room: breakfast buffet is OK, but not impressive. None/few international TV channels, no CNN, BBC etc. Make-up mirror in the bathroom barely hung on the bathroom wall. Seemed like it would fall down if I barely looked at it, which is sketchy because of electrical wires. Did not try the bar. To summarize: most is very good, but they really need to look into their routines for breakfast delivery to the rooms. This may, however, not matter to you at all.

Centrally located from every perspective

The hotel is within walking distance from 2 major train stations, and tram stop as well. So it’s easy to get around. Despite being centrally located, the rooms are really quiet and peaceful which was a very positive surprise. The rooms come with a decent sized desk, allowing you to do some work. Staff are friendly and helpful. I was offered a welcome amenity as ALL Gold member, and some other perks in lieu of an upgrade due to the unavailability of larger rooms. Downside are the very firm beds, which may not be to everyone’s liking. There also was a minor issue with my sink not properly draining. While the staff were very helpful in trying to organise a fix, including a plumber coming out, the problem never was completely solved (although it improved a bit). This might indicate some bigger issues with the plumbing which may lead to issues for future visits. Also housekeeping needs some eye for detail. It can’t be that piles of laundry and cleaning equipment get forgotten and are left in the corridor until the next day (see picture) But in general, good value for money. Due to the central location, many restaurants and bars are within walking distance, as well as the touristic sites.
