Great hotel, noisy rooms

Let me start by staying that I agree with the vast majority of reviews: the hotel is in a great location, the rooms are spacious and very clean. Great amenities in room like a kettle, tea/coffee, and bathrobe slippers. I appreciated the extra amenities in the bathroom (vanity kit for makeup, shower cap, toothbrush, etc - all packaged up). Reminded me of hotels in Japan where this is standard. I received an upgrade upon check in, which was nice, but now I'm wondering if I should have taken it. My only quibble was with how noisy the room was. I was on the second floor facing the street. Music and street noise continued well past midnight. Music comes from the surrounding restaurants but also from the hotel's restaurant, which the room I was in was directly above. The hotel's music stops when they close at 10:00, but the surrounding music does not. Not the fault of the hotel, but makes it difficult if you are a light sleeper. The hotel restaurant music starts up again before 7:00, when they open for breakfast. Besides the music/street noise, I could easily hear movement and conversations of my neighbours. I managed to get a few hours of sleep, but a restful stay it was not, which is a shame because otherwise the hotel was great. It's highly possible rooms in different locations (particularly those not facing the street) would offer a different/better experience.

A Lovely Hotel

We arrived as a family of four sharing a Double Queen room. Receptionist was fine on check-in. The Hotel lobby was well maintained and pleasant on the eye. The room had space to move around in, the bathroom was spotless and were were happy with our choice. Breakfast was included in the room rate. The Serving Staff were welcoming and a Special thanks to the Ukrainian Lady, who made was very attentive. Overall, we had a comfortable two night stay here and would use it again, if we stayed in Toronto.

Despicable Customer Service

Disgraceful Customer Service The full details: on October 4th, my partner paid for her $500 room deposit with her debit card. The front desk staff explained that this was an exception – they prefer a credit card – and that she would need to tap her debit card in the morning of the 5th, to receive her refund. Early that morning, she needed to carpool with colleagues, and forgot to retrieve her refund. When I checked out a few hours later, front desk staff let me know my partner would need to return to receive the refund. This was an inconvenience – we live in Etobicoke. But it was also our mistake. Throughout the day, we called and attempted to find a solution that would prevent the need to return to the hotel. I will be transparent: as our frustrations mounted, we became curt and assertive. However, at no time did we threaten staff, raise our voices, or use profanity. We have both been supervisors in frontline customer service jobs – we sympathize with employees facing abusive customers. We requested, and never received, a call back from the manager that day. I work downtown, and walked to the hotel after work. In the lobby, I spoke with a supervisor, K. After some discussion regarding their POS systems (and explanations why they cannot process such refunds manually without the card present), we agreed to a half measure: I would retrieve my partner’s debit card, and return to the hotel and receive the refund. I also requested compensation for my time and travel – I suggested waiving the cost of one night of parking ($40) and K. agreed. I asked for the agreement in writing, and he instead gave me his word and we shook on it. Still frustrated, my partner emailed additional demands (which were not unreasonable). K. then chose to break the agreement fully, claimed we threatened staff, and demanded that my partner, and only my partner, would need to return, in-person, to receive her refund. His reply was vindictive and meant as punishment – I have included it here. We then emailed corporate Accor, and received a reply from A.T., who indicated compassion to our situation. She CC’ed us on an email to the Novotel manager F.C. requesting a resolution. F.C. replied promptly, with one of the most unprofessional communications from a manager I have witnessed. I have a attached the screenshot here. F.C. -Lies (or repeats a lie) that I requested the refund in cash -States we have three options to retrieve the refund (false, after K. broke our agreement, we had two – in-person, and a mailed cheque from corporate that will take several weeks to arrive) -Claims they have been in daily contact with us regarding the situation (false, we had to call them every time) -Claims we refuse to come in-person (false, we are desperately trying to find an agreeable solution) -Speaks about us in third person, using belittling and dismissive language “not much else we can do…”, and “….she only lives 30 minutes away from the hotel” We refuted F.C.’s statements, and heard nothing. I also mentioned in a separate email that I was frustrated that K. broke his agreement with me. We heard nothing. After we emailed her days later, A.T. managed to get F.C. to call my partner, who could not pick up. He left a voicemail. She called him back, and likewise left a voicemail. Nothing. I emailed A.T. last week with an update: nothing. I left her a voicemail and requested a call back: nothing. Yesterday, we finally attempted to put this behind us, and I requested that we be mailed the cheque. Nothing. I will mention this last (as the hotel staff should treat all guests with dignity regardless), but my partner was staying as part of a work conference. This ordeal is especially shocking in light of the business my partner’s firm provided to Novotel. We are at a loss – between the terrible treatment from supervisory/managerial staff, and now ghosting our requests for a cheque to be mailed, our options are few.

Great hotel and location, close to Union Station and the harbour. Rooms large, clean and spacious with a very comfortable bed! It had everything we needed for our stay. Hotel made a special effort to recognise our anniversary with a very tasty cake.
