Lined with white sand beaches bordering pristine waters, the Maldives makes for the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of mainland living. Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, visit between the months of November and April for the best possible combination of sun and sand. Lather up some sunscreen, apply sandals to feet and throw on some shades – it’s time to follow our tour of the Maldives’s must-see beaches.
The Maldives doesn’t just do luxury, and that’s largely down to Fulhadhoo island. The island has a refreshing, no frills feel and is one of the best places to explore lush greenery, gorgeous shorelines and unobstructed sunset views. Once you’ve had your fix of sunshine, explore Shopping Nest for a bite to eat and the chance to buy souvenirs
A local island situated in the South Ari atoll, Dhigurah boasts a cluster of independent dive shops where you can book to go whale shark diving and snorkeling amongst other exciting activities. Venture south to see Dhigurah’s secluded beach, lined with azure waters and a host of local cafes and shops from which to enjoy the scenery.
With a name that translates to “Big Island”, it’s no surprise that Maafushi has the longest coastline in all of Maldives. It’s also home to a rapidly developing city center- which makes it the perfect base to pick up supplies for on and off-land adventures. Comprising of four main beaches, (Public Beach, Bikini Beach, Water Sports Beach and Coral Beach), visitors to Maafushi Island are spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a spot to soak up the sun. Bikini Beach is still the most popular amongst tourists, boasting the best supply of rentable deckchairs and local food/drink – with more secluded options like Public Beach a good choice for those seeking serenity. Be sure to look up Active Watersports Maafushi along Water Sports Beach to get a taste of everything from jet skiing to kayaking. Those seeking out an underwater experience should look up iCom Tours on Coral Beach and join the Coral Garden Tour, which includes a full day of snorkeling, drinks and return ferry transfer to Vaadhoo Island.
Although Mahibadhoo Island does not boast a bikini beach, (meaning tourists are required to dress more conservatively) it makes up for it with a lively local scene and stunning coastal scenery. It’s also one of the best places to set out on day trips to explore the sights on quieter neighbouring islands, like the Buddhist monastery ruins on Dhanibidhoo and the Buddhist stupa on Isdhoo Island.
Half an hour north of Male by boat, Thulusdoo Island is especially popular with the island’s surfing crowd. Head to the two best surf spots in the island (for the uninitiated, that’s Coke’s and Chicken’s – named after the Coca Cola factory/chicken farms that once stood in their place) Divers also tend to flock to Thulusdoo’s famous dive spot Thingiri, which is known to attract sharks andmanta rays when in season.
