Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar has become quite the boomtown in recent years, receiving more tourists than its counterpart Mandalay. Burma is a time capsule of British colonial treasures, the most you will find in Southeast Asia. Behold the majestic, colonial buildings standing tall almost as captured in an old photograph.
Start your journey with a restful sleep at the newly opened Pullman situated smack in the downtown Colonial Quarter overlooking Maha Bandoola Park, City Hall and Sule Pagoda. All at a stone’s throw away! Find out more here .
Tea is a major part of Myanmar’s culture as Burmese people like to spend quality time with friends and family over a cup of tea, hence you’ll find plenty of tea stalls at every nook and corner of Yangon. To deeply immerse yourself in their culture, join in the tea craze and we promise, you won’t regret it.
As you walk along the Sule Pagoda Road, you’ll see a plethora of items being sold at the local market, from fabrics, fresh fruit and vegetables, local delicacies to manufactured goods such as mobile phones, cameras. Grab freshly made breakfast from the market before moving onto the next phase: Sightseeing!
Modern skyscrapers, colonial buildings, Chinese influences, Christian churches and Burmese pagodas are what makes the architecture stand out. Strolling along the Sule Pagoda Road, on one side you’ll find a square with the Yangon City Hall, Immanuel Baptist Church and skyscrapers on the other. Not a long way from there, while in transit to the most renowned Shwegadon Pagoda, in Bo Gyoke Road you'll see Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Make your way to the famous Rangoon Teahouse serving traditional Burmese food with a conventional twist. Hipster styled interiors only add to the ambience of the place. Deep dive into a bowl of mohinga, Myanmar’s national dish, or surprise your taste buds with spicy and savoury dishes such as chicken biryani. Like the name suggests, get ready to be impressed with the number of traditional tea inventions.
Rumor has it that Shwedagon Pagoda was built some 2,600 years ago, making it the main attraction in all of Myanmar. It’s a sight hard to miss even from a distance! This 325ft mass is a gold-plated sprawl of stunning temples, stupas, and buddhist statues. We suggest you arrive an hour before sunset, so you can beat the crowd and have a good spot to yourself. Get ready to be awestruck by the majestic beauty lighting up in hues of orange and red. Hint - It is the best time to take photos!
If you are looking for some downtime away from all the touristy places, head down to Lake Inya to conclude your sightseeing adventure. Lake Inya is the largest lake in Yangon, filled with recreational activities as well as calm and picturesque settings for quiet evenings.
