The rooms were lovely, the privilege room had a lovely view of the bay, the accessible room & wet room were a great size although the room was rather dark. The stay was let down by cold breakfasts each morning. Although, staff were made aware by guests nothing improved & by the third day one of us only had cereal as it was unpleasant eating a cold “hot” breakfast. An expensive start to the days for a very poor experience.

We booked 3 nights sea view room with breakfast, service and friendliness of the staff was fantastic the food excellent and our rooms were spotless with brilliant views. We were checked in by Chloe who made us so welcome and explained all of the facilities, breakfast times and parking charges leaving nothing vague. Location is excellent flat and lift from car park to all floors was so useful. We will return very soon.

Be very careful when booking to stay with dogs. I booked to stay with two chihuahuas for five nights. When I booked through Booking.com, their own Q&A stated £15 per dog. You can therefore imagine my surprise when I received a confirmation email stating £15 per dog per night. I have two issues with this. First, this is not a nominal charge, £150 should be clearly communicated on the booking page and not casually mentioned after completion. Second, I understand that dogs include extra cleaning but £30 per night is in my opinion excessive, more so when it is a ‘surprise’. I have lodged a complaint with Head Office as I believe that this practice is rather sneaky. They also refused to release me from the non-refundable booking. I understand the terms of the contract but this would have been a goodwill gesture considering my complaint, especially as I raised it on the same day.

I stayed in Paignton last week with my partner. I am a Chef at another Mercure Hotel, we enjoyed the stay, however there are a few things I would like to share my views on. Firstly, the room seemed like it hadn't been dusted since the last occupancy as there was dust almost everywhere in the bedroom. The room itself was really nice and modern and inviting, we enjoyed the walk in shower, however the shower screen in my opinion needs to be all the way down to the floor to prevent the water running over the drain. The housekeepers on shift were very helpful when I asked for little things such as extra toilet paper. In the restaurant, I managed to try most of the items on the menu, including the sandwiches. The roast beef sandwich lists mustard mayo and pickled onion, however the onion seemed like it touched pickling liquid but hadn't been pickled long enough and both my partner and I only had mayo in the sandwich, there was no trace of mustard whether be taste, or colour. Although not on the menu, my partner had issues with his stomach, therefore asked if he could have a bowl of just ice cream and was happy to pay for it. For some reason it seemed like a problem from the kitchen, but it shouldn't of been because ice cream is served on the desserts, so even if the kitchen only had say vanilla, he would of been happy with say three scoops of vanilla and charged for it. I ordered the gammon on two occasions which was served with ketchup. The first time I asked for BBQ sauce and it had to be bought over from the Ibis next door. The second time there wasn't that offer, another waiter I asked checked the kitchen and just said there wasn't any. Couple of the nights, there was a chef out in the restaurant talking to customers it seemed he knew as friends. Both nights he wore the same jacket with rips at the bottom on the back. We overheard a conversation where there was a walk in, and the chef said they were too busy. You are not busy, when most of your tables have been served and you've left your team in the kitchen while your out chatting to the same person a couple of times in the same service. Also he needs another chef jacket. The waiter in the restaurant who stood out the most was Alex. He seemed new to the floor, but he performed the best out of everyone. He needed an extra body on the floor. He was the only person asking about allergies and dietaries when he sat us down, he tried to keep the mood happy and was very attentive and remembered drinks orders which gave the experience a bit of a personal touch. Everyone else ( Including people who looked like managers/supervisors), delivered food to the wrong tables a few times, didn't ask about allergens and didn't pay attention. I sent a burger back because I couldn't have the cheese. Upon payment, the waiter recognised the no cheese note but then still bought it out with the cheese and admitted he knew but then forgot. On breakfast, I recommended the coffee sticks to be used as well as the machine as there will be people like myself who struggle to digest the coffee dispensed from the machines as it's too strong. The receptionist's reply was that they don't do this as more people will want to have a coffee made for them. This answer does not make sense. The sticks are in the room, if you already have them in the building and you make them available in the restaurant as well, your less likely to be asked for them. Overall we did enjoy the stay, however I think there needs to be training on allergens and staff need to be a bit more aware of what they are doing. Having said this, I would be more than happy to return. Kind Regards Aaron

Second stay at this great Hotel very modern less than two years old staff very attentive and helpful, parking under the hotel is £15 per night with not too much space very tight. Evening meals are OK, not an extensive menu breakfast mainly buffet style but order fresh cooked any type of eggs and hash browns.
