Lovely Hotel with a Terrible Experience

Sadly it was a terrible & discriminating experience that My Family and I had to experience along with 2 other families with children and an elderly couple who was visiting from abroad. All were Indian nationals and My family Sri Lankan. We had booked a stay at the M Gallery Hotel in Cat Ba from the 26th October till 28th October 2022. We were a group of 3 families with children from ages 4 years and up and an elderly couple visiting from abroad (the elderly couple being previous residents in Hanoi not too long ago). The Hotel was beautiful and Staff friendly and polite at Check In as well as Staff at the Bar. However beyond that sadly it was disappointing as explained below. After Check in, we had sat on the outside terrace of the restaurant and waited for a good 10 minutes before having to get up, go to the staff inside the restaurant and ask them to serve us menus and take our order. Instead of serving us they were just standing inside talking with each other, looking at us and not bothered. The next morning for breakfast my son (9 years old) had asked a female staff for some hot water. She bluntly told home everything is served on the counter table to go get it himself, is this how a 5 star hotel treats a little boy? Horrible!! At this point my Wife had to sternly tell the Staff that there was no hot water and to assist a small boy as its her job. Then on the 26th night we were having dinner inside the restaurant. We had such a tough time placing our orders. The Restaurant Manager who spoke English was always stood next to a table with western expats. Literally he stood there with them the whole night chatting with them and had kept 2 staff to serve us who couldn’t speak English. He didn’t even bother to come and serve our table or assist in any way except for once passing by. Clearly he found the Westeners or to put in in plain English “white skin” more important than us. Yet we did not make any issue and with difficulty managed. The one time he passed by us, My Wife asked for glass of hot water to which he replied “ oh hot water, that will take some time” and walked off. He never returned and hot water never served. He had immediately returned to the same table and talking with them (Western guests). Finally at the end of dinner, the elderly gentlemen in our group asked some food to be packed, a female staff brought 2 take away boxes and kept it on the table telling us to pack the food ourselves. How disrespectful and such disgusting service in an M Gallery Hotel under Accor Group. Later we all were on way with kids to the elevator and asked for the Manager to voice our disappointment, we had to wait a while as he was as usual talking the the Western guests at the same table he was the whole evening. When we voiced our disappointment, one of the male guests from that table he was mingling with the whole evening, approached the elderly lady in our group and started verbally attacking us saying we took the manager from their table as they were talking and we should not complain as he (The manager) is a sweet person. We all had to intervene and tell him to back off, mind his own business and that we waited for the Manager and never came and dragged him away from their table, all the time the manager never even once bothered to come and stop the Harassment we and our kids faced. It was absolutely a horrible and disgusting experience, it was so clear that the Manager and certain staff under him have an issue with skin color and discriminates. Finally the day we were leaving I had requested to meet the general Manager and they brought Mr Hoang Van Hai (Executive Assistant Manager) to meet me. I had explained everything that happened and what a horrible experience we had. The Restaurant manager didn’t even apologize. I have never experienced such discrimination in any other chain of Hotels/ Private Hotels around the Globe. I still have no words to describe what a sad, hurtful and horrible experience it was to be discriminated like that, ganged upon by the Managers friends and be harassed in front of our little Children. The Restaurant Manager never once bothered to even apologize for his behaviour, unprofessionalism and more over not even bothering to stop his favored western guests from harassing us in front of little children. Neither my friends nor I will ever set foot in that horrible hotel and will be sure to share our experience with friends and family. I hope that the GM and Accor Group will take the necessary stern action to ensure such situations never repeat again to anyone regardless or race.

This is a fabulous setting and an equally good hotel. We stayed for 5 nights and could have stayed longer. We probably benefited from the hotel being pretty quiet as out of season (November 1st to 5th) but the staff were so friendly and able to help with trips, transfers etc. We had a meal in the Japanese restaurant which was possibly best meal of this kind we have ever had. The pool area is lovely and very relaxing, quiet music playing and the swim up bar was cool. Breakfast choices are extensive with Western and local options available. It’s about a 20 min walk into Cat Ba town or you can get a 5 min (70,000 VND) taxi or golf cart. We enjoyed ‘happy hour (basically all day) cocktails at Oasis Bar and ate at Quiri a couple of times where the staff were great, we recommend trying the hotpot! Overall a fabulous stay

The hotel was certainly the pearl of our trip so far. The furnishings were old school charm. The staff from checkin to checkout and at all times in between were friendly, helpful and a delight to deal with. The facilities of the hotel with numerous pools and amenities and access to the beach, gym and options of two restaurants all of high standard.

Amazing experience! The hotel decoration and pools are breathtaking. Hotel food and drinks are good but needs more attention for a Gallery hotel. The perfect sunset on the rooftop pool, and I highly recommend try the signature massage on the spa !
