Very small room that was under renovation and not finished!

We paid nearly 400 bucks for the smallest room in history, the worst part is that the walls weren't even painted, they just had a coat of undercoat roughly slapped on. They did warn us the room was small at reception but when i bought up the unfinished paint job the staff were apathetic. I have read some other reviews and there is a common theme of the room being too small for the price, Peppers always respond with that they could upgrade you to a better room ( for more money!!) seems like they are running out of excuses for renting rooms they know are too small at a high price...at the very least reduce the rate to reflect the room and please don't rent out rooms that you are still painting!! The sleep and go excuse is pretty thin too because people don't understand what that means and when they pay that much they expect a room bigger than a cupboard! Breakfast is a rip off too so head into town for breakfast if you are brave enough to stay here.

We came to Peppers (indeed to Lake Tekapo) essentially by accident. Our planned trip had taken us up the west coast of the South Island through Franz Josef but SH 6 was closed due to slips and there was no road to get there until it was fixed, so when we couldn't wait any longer to see if the road would open we canceled our motel in Franz Josef and rerouted our trip east through South Canterbury ending up in Lake Tekapo. We booked Peppers online just a few days before we stayed there and while we did secure accommodation the room was extremely small - a fact that the clerk on check-in made sure we knew! The facility is a resort and most of the better rooms (lets face it they were all bigger if not better!) had a view of the lake. In five decades of travel I cannot remember a smaller hotel room although it was clean and the bed was comfortable and king sized. I think it was a room that would have made up a second bedroom to one of the bigger resort rooms as needed. The resort is well situated but Lake Tekapo is little more than a village and there are few facilities there at least in the shoulder season. Because of our short notice booking we could not find any space on the astronomy tour which we would have loved, but we had a good restaurant meal near the lake.

Overpriced and undersized

Don’t recommend staying here - overpriced and underwhelming. The room we had for two people barely had space to accommodate our suitcases and my wife got bitten by bedbugs (!) during our stay. Find a different option for your time in Tekapo. The staff are also unprofessional and not particularly oriented to caring for guests. Also, who starts doing housekeeping at 8AM? This was another disruption to our stay.

It is disappointing to hear the room you were provided failed to meet you expectations, I note your reservation was for one of our standard hotel rooms which are by definition and are of course advertised as a ‘Sleep & Go’ type accommodation. A recognized challenge for us is to ensure that all of our Agents and methods of booking are correctly informed of the size of the room. After arriving at the hotel, depending on the property occupancy, we are sometimes able to offer upgrade options. These upgrade options for larger room types incur additional fees as would happen in most all hotels. Note that Peppers Bluewater Resort has never had any incidents or reports of bed bugs. We appreciate your sharing your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future. Sincerely,

The standard room is very limited

Great location, but our standard room was somewhat disappointing. It was very small, so little space to place any travel bags. The bathroom was nice with a walk in shower. However unlike other motels there were no facilities (or space) to prepare any food, albeit there was a fridge to store perishables - so all that could be prepared were hot drinks. There was a courtesy torch which didn’t work, and despite the comfy bed there was unacceptable noise from an adjacent room - it sounded like Concorde taking off, but we think it was the use of a spa bath (which luckily only lasted for 20 mins, albeit at 11pm- not great, and then it happened again at 6 am the following day!). Then there was a low level noise that we think was the bathroom extractor fan running for a fixed period after switching off, but it went on for a ridiculous period. We raised the issue of the noise and the torch with reception the following day and they seemed somewhat non plussed by the information, albeit they said there was a room above us (we knew that!!) and noted the need to look at the torch. So our experience was somewhat mixed, but overall we would not recommend the standard room if it was (as ours was) a the back of the block on the ground floor with limited natural light and a unedifying view of the steps/bank up to the parking area. Nevertheless, the bar/restaurant area is nice with a lovely view over the duck pond and lake beyond.

While this was fine I can't really recommend it. I only stayed there because I was late booking and there is very little accomodation in Lake Tekapo. A Lake View Suite was all that was left. It was clean and well maintained, but the layout is very odd. A small downstairs bedroom and bathroom, then a large living area with a poorly stocked full kitchen upstairs. This just wasn't the accomodation for me. However, if you're looking to host six people to dinner in Tekapo you might be delighted with this. Instead I felt I was paying a lot for a lot of space I didn't need while the space I was using was very average for the cost.
