As I was in Sydney, decided to check out the Sofitel Darling Harbour to have a feel of how it compares with its same namesake in Asia-Pacific and Oceana, in particular Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok (left out Hua Hin as it is more a Thai seaside resort) and Seoul. Its central location on the fringe of Sydney CBD in the picturesque Darling Harbour, with the Convention Centre just across, nearby Sydney Entertainment Center, the Star and Crowne casinos, Chinese Garden, Chinatown, etc. is a plus. Great views of the Sydney skyline from the rooms, especially on the high floors and of course from Club Millésime executive lounge at the very top. There are a few F & B outlets, but only the Atelier (for breakfast and dinner and the foyer (which were quite busy and well patronized) were operational. The hotel set up and décor is pretty much Accor standard for Sofitel, age taken into consideration. Service is up to expectations with some individual demonstration of exemplary service by Philip and Matthew in Club Millésime. Afternoon tea and evening cocktails were limited in the spread and selection. Had dinner at the Atelier restaurant and found the food to be of a standard worthy of a restaurant in a 5-star hotel; staff were attentive, efficient and helpful, thank you Mina. Checked out the breakfast spread in the Atelier, before heading up to Club Millésime for a quieter and leisurely breakfast. The spread is not elaborate (compared to other geographical locations) though it is more the norm for such level of hotels in Oceana. The executive lounge spread consisted of core selections and a cooked to order menu items; it covered most of my breakfast complement. The room of 35 m2 was a little on the smaller side; wasn’t sure and did not ask if it was an upgraded level. Décor is Accor level, layout practical but toiletries were not as comprehensive. Bedding is comfortable and wi-fi is good. As an Accor Plus member, the member benefits for Asia Pacific and Oceana applies. Comparing Sofitel in Asia Pacific and Oceana, Sofitel Darling Harbour Sydney would not make top, but considering the geographical location and other chains in the same location, it is up there amongst the 5-star hotels and this taken into consideration I had a more than satisfactory stay.
