Avoid that terrible and russian speaking place, learn some English please, clean up the rooms, uncomfortable smell in wc Plesiosaur in staff was very means and unfriendly to us, just because we are English speaking Lithuanians.

New Year Break in Riga

My partner and I decided to spend three days at New Year in Riga, and decided to book here as was able to use points from the Accor loyalty programme to pay towards the room. After flying from London we got the number 22 bus from the airport, which took around 30 minutes to the central station- the hotel is a 5-minute walk from here. Upon arrival at the hotel reception we were met with an empty desk, and sign saying someone would be back in 20 minutes. As we were hungry and it was now getting close to 11pm, we decided to go into the next door Origo shopping centre and find some food. We then returned to the hotel, and this time there was a member of staff at reception who was able to check us in. We were given room 335, and we were initially impressed with what we were given. The room had a contemporary feel and was of a good size. There was ample space for clothes and shoe storage, a safe and a fridge which contained a number of food and drink items for purchase, together with complimentary tea and coffee-making facilities. There was also a clean and spacious bathroom with a good quality shower. We had breakfast included in our rate, and were quite underwhelmed by the experience. The breakfast room is not big enough for the number of guests in the hotel, meaning that people often have to wait around for a table to become available. During our stay they were also understaffed, meaning that tables weren’t cleared regularly and dirty crockery soon built up. This also meant that crockery wasn’t cleaned so there were shortages- we had to use paper cups for our coffee and orange juice. We also felt that the choice of food and drink on offer was limited, and not what you would expect for a hotel of this type. At the end of our first day in Riga we returned to our room and noticed a strong smell of sewage. We asked if this could be dealt with or moved to another room, and reception agreed we could move to room 352. After moving in we realized that it had connecting door to the next door room, with the result that we could hear in intimate detail what was being said. This was not too much of a problem the the first night, but on the final night of our stay there was a lot of noise and I had to knock on the door to ask our neighbours to be quiet. The hotel is well located- it is only a 10-minute walk to the Riga Old Town. The Origa shopping centre has a range of shops including a large Rimi supermarket which we visited to buy drinks and snacks during our stay. We also took a day trip to Jurmala on the coast during, and it only takes 30 minutes by train from the Central Station. There is also a spa in the hotel but guests have to pay to use it, which we found surprising. We enjoyed spending New Year in Riga, but were slightly disappointed with our stay at the Mercure. Maybe it was the time of year but we felt that the hotel was not firing on all cylinders during our stay, and hope that this was a one-off.

Good location, city center. Do not use any gift cards with special offers like "vacation with spa for two" in this place. Spa - two miniature baths. (The steam sauna has a strong mold smell) Jacuzzi - "bath" with ice water. Dinner is a separate topic. First of all, they mixed up the dishes. "Special menu" - cheap pasta with chicken or salmon, oversalted soup (very similar to the ready-made version from the store, because it is impossible to eat meatballs in it. I'm not even sure that there is meat in them.) and dessert - by the way, a very tasty cake. The room is clean, but very small. Champagne was prepared for us, and a welcome letter was addressed to a completely different person. The view from the window is an inner courtyard and an old house. The air conditioner did not work. (Judging by the reviews of many guests - it never works). To the question: How long does the staff at the reception desk work, the answer was given in a rude and dismissive manner (blonde girl). Unpleasant bartender

We had quite a pleasant stay, although it was slightly marred by a few issues. The rooms are spacious enough, but there was a water outage, which is never a pleasant experience. The air conditioning also needs repair as we encountered problems with it as well. A very unpleasant experience was with the bartender, who is definitely not suited for his job. I haven't seen such an attitude in a long time! He didn't even respond to questions or requests to purchase something. It was disgusting to witness. I didn't catch his name because he wasn't wearing a badge, but it seems unlikely that people straight out of prison would be employed here (at least I haven't seen such individuals), as he was the only issue. However, this was the only negative encounter with the staff. The reception staff were helpful and apologized profusely for the water shortage, which was understandable since it wasn't their fault at all. I would also like to express my gratitude to the manager, Vladislav (if I remember correctly), who assisted with issues regarding the room and the bartender's unacceptable attitude. Although I do not live in Latvia, I would like to find a hotel to stay at when I visit. If the issues with this one staff member and the ventilation were resolved, my husband and I would gladly stay here again and again. The prices could be more friendly, but it is the season...

Stone Faced Staff, Adequate Accommodations, Safe Convenient Area

This is a basic hotel within walking distance of the bus station, with a basic breakfast in the morning though I would avoid the omelet station (the woman making omelets that morning burned mine, totally charred black on the bottom and inedible). The front desk staff are among the unhappiest I have ever seen, stone faced as if they were forced to be there as indentured servants. There were long lines at check in as well. If you just need basic lodging this is an option but if you are looking for any degree of service at all you will need to go elsewhere.
