Just the Basics, Nothing More

This is not a hotel I would recommend. They get the basics right: The quality of food is very good, you can’t fault the hygiene, the rooms though not the biggest are reasonably well appointed, laundry is good, etc. Where things become dissatisfying is in service. This is one of those hotels which seems to have done the capex well but gone low-rent on the opex. So, let me be clear, we did not have an unpleasant experience, but the following demonstrates why this hotel isn’t worth the money you pay for it. Most of this has to do with restaurant service. We walk in for lunch at 1200 on the day of our check-in and they said they don’t accept orders until 1230. They were rather stubborn about it. So we ate outside. Didn’t seem to bother them that they lost a meal in billing. The breakfast buffet begins at 0700. The dishes aren’t all in place by then, and I found no waiters in the restaurant for at least 10 minutes after. The little wooden receptacle on the table that holds forks and spoons and knives will always have fewer of those things than you need. Tissues are always on short supply. They have a cute little tea-shop which serves various kinds of very well-made chai. But the glasses are too small. All of this would be entirely expected and acceptable in a hotel that charged half the room rent that they do. But not in this class. This hotel claims to be more than it is. All this is besides the fact that the food itself was good. The waiters very easily tell us that something is unavailable when another waiter has told us that it is available. We then got the two of them to talk to each other to conclude that that dish was, in fact, available. On one occasion, we ordered aloo gobi without tomato. Much intense debate ensued. Some kind of sous chef or assistant chef came out and tried to explain to us that that was an impossible recipe. I find that quite ridiculous. I am no chef, but I can certainly whip up an aloo-gobi without tomato. We got the order only after I reassured the man from the kitchen that it’s fine if it doesn’t come out as he imagines it or in a way that is, in his opinion, nice. The result was not bad at all! The dish was actually good, if a little spicy. Why then the lack of confidence? Is it a lack of experience? If it is, why does he hold that job? One of us asked for some bread with their soup. The (very kind and sincere) waitress looked at us askance. She had the courtesy to tell us, “about that I don’t have knowledge.” Asked her to check with somebody else. We learnt that the restaurant is unable to serve bread with soup. At that room rent, not acceptable. At breakfast I ordered fried eggs. flipped. They waitress came back a few minutes later and asked if I wanted an omelette. I said no. A fried egg. She asked again. I said the same thing again. Ultimately, I got both an omelette and a fried egg. The rooms are also rather dimly lit. This place lacks the finesse and sophistication you’d expect at its price-point. If you seek that, don’t stay here.
