Good value for money, but rooms need upgrades

We stayed at here for a weekend visit to the city in December. The hotel staff prior to arrival were helpful and prompt in their responses. On arrival again the staff were helpful and friendly, there was a slight mix up with the room after we’d arranged an upgrade which hadn’t been arranged but, the staff told us they’d sort it and to their credit they did. We upgrade and stayed in an executive room with river view, I would say describing it as “river view” is questionable and in any case it wasn’t a picturesque view of the river. The room was functional and find for what we needed, the room needed some TLC and modernisation, there were stains in the visions of the furniture, the amenities were functional and storage was adequate, the bed was comfortable. The hotel overall was situated in a convenient location for the value, Fishermans Bastion is 20 mins walk, St Stephens Basilica and the central points over the other side is about 30-35 mins. Locally to the hotel there are some restaurants, bars, a shop and most conveniently, the metro station is a 2 min walk which is only 2 stops to the main area around St Stephen’s and the Christmas Markets. Overall, the hotel offered good value for money when factoring in the price paid compared to others locally albeit, the rooms need some improvements

While the hotel itself was pleasant, our experiences with the reception staff during check-in and check-out were unfortunately very negative. Upon arrival, I presented a written confirmation with a price for a two-night stay with breakfast for three people. However, the receptionist completely disregarded this confirmation and attempted to charge a higher rate. It's concerning to question whether staff members at this hotel communicate effectively with one another. A second issue arose when we informed a receptionist that we would be paying upon checkout and splitting the bill between the three of us. Gabor,(I believe was his name) the receptionist, insisted that we could not split the bill and that only one card could be used, which seemed unusual for a hotel of this size. After discussing it with my friends, we agreed that I would pay the entire amount. Just as I was about to pay, the receptionist abruptly decided to charge the card we had used for the pre-authorisation without our consent. This was a completely unexpected and unacceptable practice. We were quite upset as this was not our agreed-upon arrangement. The receptionist's dismissive laughter in response to our concerns was incredibly unprofessional. It's unclear whether this treatment was due to discrimination, a lack of professionalism, or some other reason. Regardless, we will certainly avoid this hotel in the future. As a regular Accor customer for nearly two decades, I've never encountered such a frustrating and disrespectful experience, nor have I received any apology or explanation from management.

Underwhelming & deteriorating

Regular visitor, yet unfortunately the hotel appears to be deteriorating on each visit, with this particularly being the worst, beginning with unclean room (pics of curtains & a disgusting toilet seat), and also noticing for the first time in this room a distinct lack of water pressure in the shower, (not sure if general complaint, as have noticed other reviewers complain of same, or if related to specific room/s 🤷‍♂️?) The restaurant food quality also appears to be declining, whereas it used to regularly excel, yet dinner definitely underwhelmed on this occasion with a particularly disappointing (& greasy) goulash soup, followed by lacklustre chicken supreme dish (whatever happened to the excellent Chicken Caesar salad offering, now off the menu?) Restaurant may also suffer/be overwhelmed by large groups, as hotel seems to be getting busier re large bus tourist groups, (tourist bus groups 😖 - another negative in itself!)

Location excellent, front desk staff help full, cheerful and knowledgeable. Bar area has no ambiance, would be nice to relax after a long day of being a tourist. Area is too bright, bar staff don't even know what win glass or gin glass to serve up. Some background music would help. Kettle in the room, 2 sachets of coffee, no milk extremely poor show.

Every year I spend (business and private) 70 to 80 nights in Accor properties all over the world in several brands (Ibis, Mercure, Novotel, Adagio, Sofitel, ect.) As a Platinum member of their loyalty program, I always get upgraded to the Executive rooms. After two out of five nights in the Novotel Danube this now means a room on the forth floor with a nice view on the river and the parlement. Walkkng distance to the centre on the other side of the river is about 30 minutes. Public transport (tram, bus and Metroline 2) is only five minutes from the hotel. So, the location is good. A mini bar with four drinks a day is included. WiFi is dependable and the room and bathroom are clean. The staff is showing professional courtesy. There are however a couple of points for improvement. The water pressure is very bad, with only a small trickle of water coming from the shower, even with the Eco stand off. The same from the tap above the sink. This sink isn't draining very well. The carpet is worn and should be replaced. There is not really an airconditioning system, but an airflow system that cools down the room, but not under 25 degrees (It is 33 to 36 degrees in Budapest now). Choice at breakfast good be better. If the price would have been mid-range (€50 to €100), I would have given four out of five. But since I pay a top range price of more than €100 a night, I expect the mentioned issues to be addressed. And since I have been reading the same comments from guests in the past, not enough has been done with the feedback until now. In a four star hotel you expect the management to pick up on the known issues and solve them.
