Stands head and shoulders above the competition

I stay in this hotel three to four times a year on work trips and I’ve never had anything but a great stay. The beds are comfortable, the staff welcoming, the rooms clean, the water pressure great - even the pens in the room are a cut above the competition. Little things like an actual carton of milk in the fridge for tea and coffee, or a supply of travel adapters at the concierge desk, elevate this hotel above the competition. I’ve stayed at more than five hundred hotels across the world over the last decade, and the Sofitel is one that I’d happily come back to time and time again. I don’t say that lightly - the staff and management should be proud at what they’ve achieved here. I’m looking forward to seeing it again after the renovation is complete.

Average hotel, good rooms but a bit dated

Currently the hotel is undergoing refurbishment, so any comments should be read in that context. During the refurbishment which I think is due to complete by July 2024, all bars/restaurants are closed, and the hotel only offers a basic breakfast buffet. Rooms are clean but clearly dated, and I don’t think a room update is part of the refurbishment. Therefore the service is really basic: essentially they only offer you a bed. Combined with the construction noise and not so great insulation from the street noise, I think the rooms are overpriced (at least as long as the works are ongoing) and you could get the same service/amenities as the cheaper brands in the Accor group like ibis. I decided to cancel my upcoming booking and change to another hotel at least until the refurbishment is done. Given that there are no in house dining options, it feels wrong that they charge you for room service as they specifically state that “during the refurbishment, food service will be offered as in room dining”. You have no other option! It’s not a bad hotel, but with or without refurbishment, not the “grand and luxurious” hotel image that they try to portray. Staff was efficient and friendly, so no complaints there.

Very good experience in spite of renovation upgrade project

Late arrival from Singapore for week stay and placed in rather small bedroom and bathroom facilities. Following day we approached Cassia, FOM, who promptly relocated us in more generous luxury King Bed accommodation and facilities for which we were grateful. We had the majority of meals at the Hotel, notwithstanding the $62M renovation work being undertaken, as there was no noise intrusion during the day or night. Meals of good standard were delivered in house without service charges as the restaurant provided only limited lounge service until afternoon. Staff were engaging and room servicing was good. Overall, the experience was very good with great location of hotel an advantage. Only shortcoming was the very limited TV channels with no Sky or sport options. Good WIFI.

Great Location

The room we had was tiny, more comparable to hotel rooms in Europe instead of Australia. However, it was comfortable, and the location was good. It was a rather steep walk from the hotel to Circular Quay but not very far. We were with a large tour group and had our farewell meal in the hotel restaurant. The servers treated us as if we were in a 5 star restaurant instead of a hotel with the breakfast buffet set up for the following morning. More style than substance, as we say. The food was delicious though.

Family stay in Sydney

We stayed in a club junior suite 2 adults and 1 child. Having the lounge area is great when traveling with kids to have that extra space. Rooms are decorated very classic not overly modern. Having the club access was amazing breakfast, afternoon tea and evening drinks and canapés were so good to have. Close walk to circular quay and tram and train handy for sight seeing.
