A comfortable stay; well located

I stayed here for two nights in May 2025. The hotel is very conveniently located on the edge of the central business district, so just 1-2 blocks away from restaurants, shops. There is parking that belongs to the hotel (not sure if it is free), although I left my car on the street right opposite the hotel and that was free. The hotel is modern and very tidy. The room had all the usual amenities. I was there for a conference and the food provided for lunch and morning and afternoon teas was simply outstanding. I would be happy to stay here again. If not available, the Ibis is right next door and is also a very good hotel (see my separate review).

Whilst it is an older hotel and yes it may need an upgrade, the overall condition of the room wasn’t bad. We had two double/queen beds which were provided a comfortable.sleep and stay Pros - very central, close to everything - Decent breakfast - reasonably priced - clean rooms, and spacious Cons - Central but noisy, expect noise and music from nearby bars and pubs particularly Friday/Saturday nights - rooms need a dire upgrade - no off street parking - so you’re paying or trying to find one which can be tricky

Disappointing Stay – Standards Have Dropped

As a long-time Accor member, I’ve come to expect a certain level of service from Novotel properties, but my recent stay at Novotel Rotorua was deeply disappointing. Despite confirming a reserved carpark in advance, no space was available upon arrival and multiple follow-ups with staff led nowhere. Basic amenities like water and milk were missing from the room and housekeeping skipped one of our rooms entirely. Repeated calls to reception went unanswered or were cut off. The final straw was being scolded by a staff member for placing a (dirty) water jug on the counter while seeking assistance. We also couldn’t use our welcome drink vouchers as promised due to unreachable reception. This experience felt more frustrating than relaxing, and far below the standard I’ve consistently experienced at other Accor hotels. Sadly, I won’t be returning unless there’s a clear improvement in hospitality and professionalism

Like a Neglected Student Flat

Just don’t stay here. The state of the hotel is an embarrassment to the Novotel brand as is the service. Accor hotels are generally profession and well maintained this is an awful exception. We chose Novotel as while it’s not lux it’s solid. I won’t make that mistake again. The hotel is understaffed and disorganised. For example, at breakfast staff didn’t seat anyone. This meant tables were half occupied and when you ordered a coffee it might make it to you if you hovered over the barista. Dinner was awful bar food or a buffet. My chicken burger patty was rubbery and definitely reconstituted. The staff didn’t even seem to know how to serve a table and leaned across the table/slid plates to serve the table. It was amateur. And every serviette in the place was damp. Every time. Don’t put them on your lap. There is not enough linen for the hotel. So we got towels sporadically at some point after housekeeping turned up. But housekeeping came through around 3-4pm each day. Clearly there were not enough staff to get rooms done in the morning so guests got interrupted in the afternoon. And the level of cleanliness was poor. On checking in we found there were no bathrobes/slippers and hair from the previous occupants in the bathroom. It took 3 phone calls and 2 hours to sort it out. Then there was the state of the room itself. Tired doesn’t begin to describe it. NZ has a reputation for crap rental accommodation and I think that was the vibe they were going for. All the walls were marked. The carpet stained and worn. The cabinetry was swollen from moisture and cracked. The curtains were threadbare. The bathroom was mouldy with soap scum build up on all the tiles. All the fittings in the bathroom were rusty and needed replacing. The shower curtain was ripped and mysterious stains were all across the tiles. The light fitting was broken. In short, my student flat was nicer. My daughter’s room was just as bad so that’s the standard of the hotel. Finally the common areas are somewhat less tired. But the pool is small and couldn’t accommodate the guests and it needs attention. And the EV charger doesn’t work. Staff don’t know how to assist with it. Upside: no one was rude, just incompetent and poorly organised. Tellingly, on checking out the desk clerk didn’t even enquire if I enjoyed my stay. I guess that encapsulated the vibe: it’s crap and we don’t care. Unless you live in a mouldy student flat you will be disappointed with this hotel.
