Sundowner at the Old Cataract Hotel

Stopped for a cocktail on the terrace of the Old Cataract Hotel. An oasis of calm alongside the frenetic activity of downtown Aswan. Watching feluccas sail gently by as the sun goes down is a real delight. We had Cointreau based cocktails which were delicious if a little pricey but worth it for the surroundings and the sense of history. We were very well looked after by the bar manager Hera Simon who could not have been more helpful

Magical Getaway on the Nile

A Truly Magical Stay at the Old Cataract Hotel If you’re looking for a hotel that redefines the word “hospitality,” look no further than the Old Cataract Hotel. From the moment we arrived, every staff member not only greeted us with a smile but seemed to anticipate our needs before we even knew what they were! Seriously, how do they do that? The rooms? they’re everything you’d want them to be—authentic yet luxurious. We stayed in two suites: first, the Nile-facing suite on the ground floor of the old building, then a suite in the newer Cataract wing. Both were stunning, but the old building stole our hearts with its charm and character. If you’re debating between the two, trust me, go for the old building. It’s worth every penny. Now, let’s address the elephant in the room—yes, it’s a bit pricey. But hear me out: it’s one of those rare places where the value justifies the cost. You’re not just paying for a room; you’re paying for an experience that’s second to none. Special shoutouts are in order: Marvel, you’re a star. Your arrangements and warm hospitality made us feel so welcome! Marina, thank you for the wonderful tour—you brought the history of this place to life. Mahmoud (the trainee), who served at our private dinner. keep up the great work, you’re doing amazing! And BuBola, along with the entire team, thank you for going above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. If you’re looking for a stay that combines history, luxury, and some of the best service you’ll ever encounter, do yourself a favor and book a suite at the Old Cataract. It’s not just a hotel—it’s an experience you’ll treasure forever.

We just enjoyed a fantastic 3 centre trip to Egypt ... Aswan, Luxor for history and El Qusier for beach and snorkeling.  We started at the fabulous Sofitel Legend Old Cataract in Aswan. It certainly is a legend with an amazing history and many famous visitors. More important though, is the incredible location ... right on the edge of the Nile.   We stayed in the Nile Wing. Whilst it is not attractive externally !!! the rooms are beautifuly appointed with every modern amenity and large balconies with fantastic views of the Nile.  All the staff are welcoming and helpful and we very much enjoyed a hotel tour of the Agatha Chrstie and Winston Churchill suites with Batsi. Breakfast used to be on the outside terrace, but is now served in the amazing 1902 restaurant. We also had dinner there, which was excellent and surprisingly reasonable.  The pool area is glorious and was very quiet during our visit, as most visitors are out on sightseeing tours. We have stayed here twice before so this time we did not venture out to Aswan, nor make the 8 hour round trip to Abu Simbel. Do go there if you have time ... it is incredible. Philae temple is more accessible and can be done in a couple of hours. Back at the hotel, enjoy a drink on The Promenade watching the feluccas glide serenely by as the sun goes down. Magical !

This is the most lovely hotel. The situation is perfect with wonderful views of the Nile. The atmosphere is relaxed and elegant and you feel transported back to the very best of he 1930’s. The staff were excellent, especially Nour who showed us around. We dream of coming back.
