Great location, but less than great rooms

The ibis Brussels City Centre hotel is perfectly located for exploring the heart of Brussels; however, this is closer to an ibis Budget than nearly every other ibis hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The rooms are tired and cramped, with pillows that are in dire need of replacing – we had three for two people, all flat, limp and lifeless with no support whatsoever. The air conditioning also doesn’t allow you to choose the temperature you want – it was 22 degrees when we entered, and it wouldn’t go below 19 (despite the optimal temperature for sleep being 18). In the end we opened the window to cool the room down (the ‘suicide prevention’ chains were also broken, meaning we could open the very large window fully). The bathroom was the worst, however. Although not an old hotel, this was clearly designed for children – I challenge any adult human over 5”10 to be able to sit on the toilet without banging their knees against the wall in front of them. The shower was one of the tiniest I’ve ever seen – a triangle sized bay raised off the ground, with an already small door cut into two saloon-style doors. You couldn’t even open them whilst having the bathroom door closed, as one half would swing into the bathroom door. This could have been fixed with better design - a square shower where the toilet is against the window wall, with the toilet against the wall where the shower is. However, on arrival, we had a flickering striplight bulb that made it near impossible to use without either getting a severe headache or being in the dark. As we’d checked in during late afternoon, maintenance had all gone (apparently they go home at 3pm) and none of the staff members could replace it, or get someone to do it for us. This is a big failing of hotel cleaning staff – checking lights are working should be routine. We were told we couldn’t switch rooms as nothing else was available in the class we’d paid for and to check back later that evening. We did, but still nothing was available, so we were given late checkout to 2pm (after our second night) and promised maintenance would visit tomorrow afternoon to ensure the second night would be better. Brussels seems full of gorgeous hotels, but we chose this ibis as Accors ALL customers thinking it would be like the ones in Paris – it’s not. I wouldn’t revisit.

Pleasant hotel in the centre of Brussels

This is a nice Ibis in the heart of the city, on the edge of the tourist quarter. I found I much preferred it to the Ibis off Grand Place, where I stayed for a few days earlier in my trip. The room was large-sized by Ibis standards. In addition to a desk with a kettle, there was also a good-sized side table. My room looked out at the church next door and the quiet street beside it. The Sainte Catherine metro station is about 200 metres away, which is convenient. Bathroom was perhaps a little tight but had a decent amount of shelf space. They even had slippers - which I don't think I've ever seen in an Ibis before.

The hotel is nearby the city centre and that’s perfect if you visit a place for a few days. The central square is just five minutes away by foot.The staff were very kind and helpful. The only bad thing is that the room was very small but we knew it.

The pillow is the fluffier I've ever felt. We went on a family holiday for 3 nights. I loved sightseeing, what a stunning place, and I loved trying chocolate it's one of the best. I love Belgium definitely visiting again!

A budget hotel, but not at budget hotel prices.

A mixed review for this hotel in a really accessible spot in the centre of Brussels. We arrived early and were welcomed by very pleasant staff and were allowed early into our rooms. Regrettably, although available on the computer, the room had not been cleaned following the previous guests. No problem, back to reception, the error was corrected and another room was found. Well done. Next, and in keeping with other reviews of this hotel, we found the room to be small and the bathroom tiny. At the prices charged, we anticipated significantly more space. Room and bathroom were clean. A budget hotel but not a budget prices. Room temperature... Although we attempted to reduce the room temperature, and reflecting that you do not expect to need air conditioning in November, we could not find a way to make this room comfortable for us. This was worse at night and we felt we were sleeping in a blast furnace! With the window open, the temperature improved but sleep was destroyed. The road noise throughout the night was extremely disturbing. Firstly there was constant loud chatter from outside reception where smokers congregated, later at 2.00/2.30am there were deliveries/collections of laundry being trundled across cobbled stones, and then (and the hotel is not to blame for this), roadworks with cutting tools started just after 6.30 in the morning. Heat and noise made sleep almost impossible for us and 3 nights later, we were glad to get home to some peace! Finally, most hotels of this nature have tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. It seems this is hit and miss in Ibis. My daughters room had these facilities. Our room did not. I did ask for a kettle at reception, not realising that I also needed to ask for cups, coffees, teas, etc. The kettle did turn up, but remained unused as the hotel did not have the foresight to think coffee etc. might also be needed! Breakfast was pleasant but chaotic. A good but confused selection of foods. In summation, great location, clean, overheated and noisy, very expensive for a budget hotel.
