Lack of air con in heatwave spoiled our stay

My wife & I stayed at this hotel for three nights, Monday 23 - Wednesday 25 June. On its website the hotel states it is ‘Air conditionné’. This is something very important to me, whatever the time of year, given how hot hotel rooms usually get even in winter. As our luck would have it, we arrived during a heatwave. I tried the AC on night 1 & cold air did not emerge. I enquired & was informed that the hotel had been caught out by the heat wave & was, in effect, still on winter setting! That a hotel would seek to prevent guests from cooling their rooms at any time of the year, let alone in June, is outrageous penny pinching. To reassure myself I re-enquired the next day & was told it would actually be Thursday before the AC worked. In the lifts there is a sign that reads ‘19°C: the ideal temperature for a comfortable night’. And yet the hotel was quite prepared to force guests to sleep in rooms where the temperature was more like 29°c. What appalling hypocrisy. We were offered a fan, which we accepted, but suffice it to say this was not on a par with properly functioning AC. And there was no offer of financial compensation in the form of a reduction on the bill. So, if you want ‘proper’ AC, not just AC set to save hotel money, best to check it will actually be available before booking here. Less importantly, many of the USB charging ports in our room did not seem to work & v few plug sockets. Positives: - Well located for tourism. - Room, bathroom etc of a reasonable size & standard but limited storage space; having sheets on the bed as well as duvet welcome; little in the way of ‘external’ (to the room) noise. - Bar offered useful range of reasonably priced snacks. - Breakfast, much as one would expect: good range etc but my wife informs me the baked beans were cold (I did not try anything cooked/heated). Overall, were it not for the disgusting position regarding AC I would have given this hotel a quite positive review.

In the north of France, the air conditioning only turns on in the summer, and we had terrible cold weather. Before turning the air conditioning back on, we must have the system checked by an external company, and the rules are very strict. We didn't think there would be 2 days of intense heat. Ничего выдающегося, обычный отель. Минут 20 от жд вокзала. В душе плохо работает слив, туалет отдельный от ванной комнаты, маленький, дверь открывается вовнутрь, людям с комплекцией будет сложно войти.

I liked this hotel. Great location, 10 mins walk from the Grand Place & the two main train stations. Lovely bar with friendly staff, nice big rooms, a nice gym in the hotel, and complementary water at reception with empty bottles which you can fill up and take to your room. Only minor grumble was that there no plug sockets at one side of the double bed, so to plug in your phone or check the time, you had to get up out of your bed to do so. Very minor grumble though. Overall, a nice hotel and I would definitely stay again.

We stayed here in order to go to a game at the Rugby World Cup, while this was on they tripled the charge for an overnight stay but this is true of hotels in all cities hosting an event so it was expected. The hotel is in a good location just a short walk from the old town and many bars & restaurants. There's also a supermarket around the corner for beer/wine (there's a fridge in the room) or snacks. It's also not too far from the Eurostar station which you can walk to or take the metro. The format of the bedrooms seemed to vary depending on the location, ours was on the 4th floor and had a separate shower in addition to the bath but it had no room to store flat clothes, there was only hanging space. Rooms on the 2nd floor only had a bath with a shower outlet but plenty storage room for clothes. Regardless our room was clean, quiet, well decorated and had a comfortable bed - nothing at all to complain about. It also had a safe, a large flat screen TV and good wi-fi reception. The staff on reception and in the bar were friendly and helpful. The bar was very busy while we were there but they managed to cope very well with the number of orders for both drinks and food. Drinks were on the expensive side but this is true of most hotels. Breakfast was a bit disappointing in terms of variety and quality (especially the hot items) but the bread was fresh and there was some fruit on offer. There is a courtyard area where you can sit outside in addition to the bar/breakfast areas and we found this a convenient place to sit on the last day while we were waiting for transport to go home. As it is close to Flanders we took the opportunity to book a private WW1 battlefield tour which we enjoyed. If we decide to return to do a similar tour we will certainly stay at this hotel.

We arrived today for a 3 night stay and we were met at the hotel by 2 reception staff that were absolutely fantastic. Their names were Ahmed and Bogdan and they were both so welcoming. Thank you both for the great introduction to this hotel you are both a credit to Novotel
