Do you know Tokyo Tamachi?

The ideal location for the global nomad and is a true reflection of today's Tokyo: modern yet traditional; efficient yet elegant.

Tamachi is a place where elegant residential areas coexist with a bustling business center. With its charming canals, historical landmarks, and easy access to Haneda international airport and the Shinkansen train line, it’s the ideal destination for business travelers. Vacationers will also appreciate its access to international travel, while enjoying the popular Tokyo districts of Asakusa, Ginza, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara and Odaiba.

Tamachi, with its distinct old Japan feel, is a bustling transportation hub and boasts numerous historic landmarks.

It is a popular location for major companies and the home of distinguished academic institutions that include the prestigious Keio University. And with its chic and stylish residential developments, the town has truly evolved into a multi-faceted urban center.

Farm Town, Seaside Town

The name Tamachi—literally “Rice Field Town”—evokes a rustic image that harkens back to the town’s origins, said to date to the Edo period. The Tamachi area once had sprawling fields that eventually gave way to merchant residences, completely changing the area’s landscape.

On the west side of Tamachi station is the district of Mita, an area that once supplied rice to the Imperial Household and meant “Honorable Rice Field.

On the east side of Tamachi station is the Shibaura district, the old tidal flats of Tokyo Bay. In the Edo period, seafood caught in the bay was a major source of food for the townspeople. “Edo-style” seafood from Tokyo Bay gained popularity, and eventually came to be known as “Shiba Zakana” (Shiba fish), while shrimp, the local delicacy, got its own name, “Shiba Ebi.” Today Shibaura is a high-rise residential district.

Just one stop away from Tamachi station on the Yamanote line is Hama Rikyu Garden Park, a great place for a leisurely stroll. The scenery in this seaside park is reminiscent of the town’s charming look and feel in a bygone era.

Transportation Hub with a Rich Historical Tradition

As the southern gateway to Tokyo from the legendary Tokaido road, Tamachi has historically been a busy transportation hub. For this reason, it was a convenient place for feudal lords to keep residences in Edo (including the powerful Satsuma Domain), setting the stage for many important historical events. Thanks to its rich history, Tamachi’s legacies include its quiet, elegant residential districts, remnants of historic feudal lord domains that include the current location of Keio University campus, and numerous other renowned academic institutions.

As a conveniently located transportation hub, Tamachi is a popular place for major companies to locate headquarters and base their operations. The area continues to develop, while preserving its legacies from the Meiji (1868-1912), Taisho (1912-1926) and Showa (1926-1989) eras.

A New Era, a Town in Transition

In preparation for the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, construction has begun on a new train station between Tamachi and Shinagawa with completion tentatively scheduled for spring of 2020. A massive undertaking, the station will be built on what was formerly a JR railyard (an area that spans 13 hectares), and will include extensive development of the surrounding area. Other major developments in the works include construction of a linear Chuo-Shinkansen station by 2027. The energy and forward-thinking that drives these ambitious projects make Tamachi an especially attractive area.
