I booked through Virgin Velocity for what was advertised as a 1-bedroom apartment with 1 queen bed and 1 king bed. The photos showed exactly that. I was travelling to Sydney with my elderly, not in the best health, mum for her sister’s funeral, so having the correct room was essential. When we arrived, the single staff member at reception checked us in. I opened the door to find one double bed. I went back down, and from there the experience spiralled. The staff member was confused, told me I had two bookings, then said one was cancelled, then changed the story again to say the room type “doesn’t exist” and that Virgin’s website was wrong. She repeatedly insisted it wasn’t her fault and that I had to “sort it out with Virgin Velocity.” I didn’t have the number on hand, and when I did find it, I couldn’t get through. She then mentioned that the hotel was “overbooked,” and when I said that meant people would arrive with bookings and have no rooms, she simply replied, “Terrible, isn’t it?” I explained that we had been travelling all day and up here for my mums sister's funeral and we really needed a room. She texted her manager, then offered a rollaway bed but refused to refund the price difference and framed it as me “saving money” because she wouldn’t charge the $50 per night for the rollaway. I declined, because I had already paid for a room with two proper beds. Then she said there might be a room with two beds, but it “wasn’t clean.” Another guest checking in even offered to give us his room. The staff member kept drifting off to help others, leaving us standing there with no solution. After more than an hour, she came back and said the only available room with two beds would cost extra. I was shocked, I had already paid for that exact room type. She again insisted there was “nothing she could do.” I asked to speak to her manager; she refused. Another man appeared, introduced himself as being from another hotel, and he also refused to help unless I paid extra. By this point, I was in tears. I asked them to call Velocity since I couldn’t get through; they tried and also couldn’t get through. Still, they stood there repeating that there was “nothing they could do.” An hour and a half later, another guest who had been checking in approached them and said, “You should be ashamed of yourselves. The way you’re treating these two ladies is disgusting. I am going to report you and put it all over social media” Only then did the staff suddenly change their tune. They apologised and offered the room with two beds, the exact room I had already paid for at no extra charge. The female staff member even laughed and handed me the key saying, “Lucky you, it’s all ready.” The next day, my mother ended up in hospital. When I came back to the hotel at 11:30pm, my key didn’t work and there was no staff onsite. I had to call a number, and the same man eventually came to let me in clearly irritated that I had woken him. This hotel is absolutely not 4 stars. It’s barely 3. The rooms and facilities are old, dirty, and run down. But the real issue is the unacceptable way we were treated during an already difficult trip. I would never stay here again and would strongly advise others to avoid this property.

Why does QANTAS list this place with a 4 rating (apparently according to Trip Advisor) when here it has a 2 rating? This hotel is a dump. Talk about a bait and switch. The photos do not represent just how run down and dirty this hotel is. Anything capable of rusting, is covered in rust. From the inside of the fridge, the stainless steel rubbish bins, to the drain grates in the bathroom. I went to grab a drinking glass and IT WAS STUCK TO THE SHELF. There weren't even forks in the cutlery drawer. Just spoons. On top of all of this, the smell. The room smelled like cooking oil or something. I wish I was making this up. Actually, I just wish I came to TA first instead of trusting the QANTAS website. Lesson Learned.

There is absolutely nothing nice about this property. It is a health hazard, and a complete embarrassment to call an Accor property. We were kicked out mid stay due to the building closing effective immediately. Not surprised!

Don’t book. Long term residents, marijuana, and countless maintenance issues.

On check in the room was dirty, the soft furniture and carpets were stained. The kettle and lamps were missing, the hand soap empty. The AC did not work, my access card did not work. The receptionist seemed resigned to the problems. I asked to move rooms, only to have the same issues in the next room. Other guests left after seeing their room and noticing their AC didn’t work on a cold night. The receptionist gave me a small fan heater to use. Long term residents live here. People move around all night banging doors. Cigarette smell is everpresent. Then came the unmistakable and pungent drift of marijuana. I actually got up at 2am and vomited after hours of exposure. A long night and the worst I have ever spent in a hotel. Don’t waste your money. Unbelievable that this is a Mantra. This hotel is well below standard.

I’m genuinely unsure how this property qualifies as 4-star accommodation. I’ve stayed in 2–3 star hotels that far exceed the quality and experience offered at Mantra Castle Hill. The hotel is tucked away at the back of an industrial area, which immediately sets an odd tone. The carpets were stained and unclean, the bed was uncomfortable, and the overall vibe was just… off. There was no recognition of my Accor status — which was disappointing — and it made me question whether Accor has actually reviewed whether this property meets their usual standards, let alone the star rating it claims. Reception is oddly located next to the underground car park, and it’s not staffed 24/7. The whole experience felt disjointed and confusing. Thankfully, this was only an overnight stay. If it had been longer, I honestly would have left and gone elsewhere.
