Deluxe Privilege room with double bed and sofa bed with bay view including half board for two nights was what we booked. The room was as described with a big telly (which you can watch from the bed or sideways from the sofa or chair) and modern attractive and practical surfaces. This style room includes an espresso machine. The machine was provided with two coffee pods which provided the two of us a coffee each on the first night but the hotel had no more pods available during our stay. The room had slightly more shelving and hanging space than Premier Inns and Travel Lodge but the facilities were generally the same. Breakfast on the first morning was confusing in its layout. This was improved on the second day but, of course by then we had memorised the previous day's layout (where the juices had been hidden out of site at the far end of the bar - something we only discovered after breakfast! The runny jam, marmalade and Marmite were dispensed from lever operated hoppers and not very appetising. The cooked breakfast was not up to Premier Inn standard - large chewy lumps of mushrooms, bacon like cardboard, tasteless black pudding, the usual consolidated scrambled egg and really poor sausages. The coffee from the machine was the poorest we had ever come across. Our evening dinner (when booked promised to comprise a full three courses but on booking in we were told that the deal was up to £30 each - not enough for 3 courses. The wine lists were just a joke - there was only one red available by the bottle, classed as 'Local' at £55.00 per bottle, and the 'by the glass' list lacked any that was actually available in red, pink or white! However, the three which were available pleased us luckily. Now the meal on the first night was excellent - beautifully prepared and presented in both main course and pudding - just delicious! On the second night there was obviously a change of kitchen staff - burnt burger, poor fish, badly presented and generally not up to standard. Next time we go to Paignton we'll look for somewhere else.

I stayed at the Mercure Paignton on my own for a short two night break The hotel is new, having only opened last year alongside its sister Ibis hotel next door - both part of the Accor chain The outside is pleasant when you approach with outdoor seating and pleasant flower borders (note someone should be regularly checking these for rubbish that has either blown in or been dropped in them) Check in was efficient and everything explained (other than a restaurant issue I'll mention later) The room was the "Deluxe Privilege room with bay view". A fairly standard room layout with the benefit of a sofa (that can be converted to an extra bed). View from the room is really good however the window was dirty on the inside with hand prints and grease marks that had been overlooked by housekeeping ALL Gold members should get what they call a 'welcome amenity' (to be fair this is usually nothing more than some fruit or cakes or chocolates) - but I received nothing alas - perhaps the hotel aren't fully aware of the ALL programme (though they did remember the drinks voucher) Bed was comfy and the bathroom fine - with the benefit of shower controls whereby you can turn the shower on without getting wet doing it Safe was locked when I arrived (again this should be on the housekeeping check list), reception arranged for this to be opened and the maintenance man arrive fairly quickly Minor gripe - all the coffee pods were decaffeinated Another minor gripe - shower gel container was empty Used the small gym on both days - one bench with plenty of free weights, treadmill, crosstrainer and bike. Also towels and water available. Lucky enough to have it to myself on both occasions. I'd booked in for the half board so had requested 6pm for the evening meal. Arrived downstairs to be advised that the restaurant was in fact closed for a function (may have been helpful for reception to advise of this on check in). However they had set up some tables in the breakfast area, so I was seated there. The staff were all very friendly though one poor lady did have to go and ask about everything as 'it was only her second day'. The menu is small but with a decent amount of choice. My opinion, for the class of hotel, is that unless you are on half board, it is a little overpriced for what you get. I had the tomato linguini - supposed to be accompanied by garlic bread which I had to ask them for (what turned up was not freshly made garlic bread, but the very cheap slices you'd expect from a supermarket - but at least they came). My dessert was also brought out for me a couple of minutes after I'd started my main course - it wouldn't have been difficult to see I wasn't ready for the dessert yet given only one other couple dining. The dessert itself, chocolate delice, looked nice but taste-wise was underwhelming Breakfast next day was 'OK' - nothing special at all and as previous reviews have commented, a little light on the selection of fruit etc., though oddly they did have smoked salmon each day so lack of fruit probably not a cost saving measure. Usual selection of hot items. Bread for toaster again was very poor quality bread unfortunately. Coffee is from one machine which was fine as it was quiet, but not sure how it would cope on a busy sitting. Didn't really see many staff at breakfast, the ones I did did say good morning. Seemed to be a lot of non-breakfast staff going in and out getting coffees etc which didn't look too professional Spent a pleasant day doing some touristy bits - the steam train / ferry to Dartmouth which is well worth going on Returned to room - shower gel still empty, the box of tissues I'd used the last ones of also not replaced neither were the tea bags - again these should be on housekeeping checklists so why missed is an issue (especially as other reviews have flagged this). The two waters were replaced but not the two soft drinks - reception mentioned they don't replace these ... given that all you get is a very tiny Pepsi and a very small juice, perhaps they should look again at this policy if people staying a few nights Checkout again was fine - they did ask if any issues and I mentioned some of those above which were noted down So it is a nicely located hotel and could be excellent if they listen and act on feedback. Posting a standard response on tripadvisor isn't the same as proactively resolving the issues. It's the type of hotel which could go downhill very quickly if the little things aren't sorted. Let's hope they do act as Paignton needs some good hotels

Great location- friendly staff, rooms are well maintained and comfortable breakfast we found to be very enjoyable good selection and hot items were hot(not always the case at some buffet breakfasts) poached eggs to order perfectly cooked, car parking at a daily charge of £15 on a first come basis definitely worth a stay if visiting the Area

Worth getting the Privilege rooms with a view

Fantastic location, very central,. We had room 201 wow what a view. Bed was huge and room was big as well, had everything you would need. Walk in shower, slippers and bath robes. View was over looking the prom and pier. Breakfast was great even had salmon. No issues with a table . Staff were very friendly and helpful. Yes parking is first come and £15 for 24 hrs but I didn’t move the car! No matter where you stay it’s the going rate. Town is a four minute walk. Torquay a bit further walked there and got bus back (£4 for two persons) Would definitely be going back.

Really pleasantly surprised how nice this place is , room was amazing with a fantastic panoramic view of Torbaydos and the Staff were pleasant especially Amy whom when above and beyond, would definitely recommend a stay for the Wow factor!!
