Mixed Experience – Not What We Expected

Ocena na stronie TripAdvisor 2.0/5

Zeljko K Opinia zatwierdzona w TripAdvisor

Our stay at Niko Seaside Hotel started with disappointment: the room we were given looked nothing like the photos online. Instead of a sea view, we had a balcony facing a wall under the pool and directly into other guests’ rooms – far from the relaxing atmosphere we were expecting. When we raised the issue, we were told that an upgrade is never guaranteed and that “no sea view” includes rooms like this. However, this doesn’t explain why the photos online clearly show balconies with sea views, even for lower categories. After some back and forth, the situation was finally resolved in our favor: we were kindly offered a room in the opposite Intercontinental building with a private pool and a true sea view – at no extra cost. This was much appreciated and definitely a highlight. The staff was polite and friendly throughout, though assistance took time and the initial response was rather dismissive, as if this situation were normal – which it clearly shouldn’t be, especially not in a 5-star hotel. In summary: Nice facilities and friendly staff, but be very careful with your room choice – what you book may not match your expectations unless you’re proactive.

No room at the inn BEWARE

This hotel is nice however the rooms are too small and there is no storage.!! I mean a wardrobe and that’s it! As for trying to get a bed by the pool ( two of) good luck with that - no room at the inn. I would estimate there are 50 beds between the 2 pools. Ok so let’s pop over to the beach over the road ( they don’t mention the road in the description). Mmmm again 30 beds there! Only about 10 with umbrellas - Again no room at the inn- so find a space on the TINY piece of beach to put a towel down - but STOP there’s an issue here - the beach is all stone, rock and shingle - most uncomfortable The overall review here is that the hotel is nice. The food is ok BUT when they built it they did not allocate enough outside space. What are you supposed to do all day? Stay in your room? Wander the streets ? can’t go on the balcony because the width is the width of a suitcase - no table or chair would fit on there! We are here on this lovely island and wandering about like lost sheep because there is nowhere to park ourselves. Please be aware of this especially if you have mobility issues and need to find a resting place for the day ….

One Star for the View and Dinner – Everything Else Fell Flat

We took a chance on Hotel Niko in Crete because of its sleek photos and the fact that it’s a relatively new hotel—only three years old. From the images, it looked like a gorgeous escape. Unfortunately, the reality didn’t match the marketing. Before booking, I called the hotel directly to discuss their sea view pricing, which I found high compared to the Intercontinental right next door. The woman on the phone assured me they’d match the price if we booked with them instead. That verbal agreement meant nothing upon arrival. We were given a partial sea view room (photos attached)—possibly the worst we’ve ever stayed in and you couldn't shower without the water entering the room (open shower). It felt like a bait and switch. No one at the hotel seemed interested in making things right. The “upgrade” they offered had a view of an unfinished building—hardly a fair alternative. As a supposed resort, it was hugely underwhelming. It’s simply a hotel with a pool and a good marketing team. For the price, we expected a level of service, comfort, and care that was sorely missing. Instead, I left feeling like we’d been taken for a ride. I deeply regret not going with the Intercontinental, just a few steps away, which now seems like a far superior choice. They advertise two pools, but one is a shallow rooftop pool, not suitable for swimming, just putting your toes in. The main pool is pretty, yes—but unless you wake up early to claim a sunbed, you’re out of luck. This was during a relatively quiet period, which says a lot. Service across the board was indifferent at best, particularly at reception. I’ve never experienced such cold front desk staff, save for one kind gentleman on our last day who helped me find the restroom. That was the only time I felt treated like a guest rather than a transaction. The spa was another disappointment. On a rainy day, we tried to book treatments, only to be told everything was fully booked. But what shocked us most was that you have to pay to use the sauna and steam room—even as a hotel guest. That was a first for us. It made it abundantly clear that the hotel isn’t interested in guest satisfaction—it’s interested in extracting as much money as possible, even from those already paying premium rates. Breakfast was forgettable—basic and lacking finesse. The only bright spot was dinner on the rooftop. The food was genuinely good, especially for vegetarians, and the dinner service was warm and attentive. But during the day, don’t expect anyone to check in with you at the pool. There’s zero service, and the poolside menu is uninspired at best. Yes, there’s a nice view from the pool. Yes, the dinner was solid. But beyond that, this was one of the worst holiday stays we’ve ever had. I’m giving it one star, and only because of the food and the view. Otherwise, I felt mugged—truly. The promises weren’t kept, the experience was joyless, and the value for money was laughable. We won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend Hotel Niko to anyone.

Four Star not Five star. Needs a great general manager to sharpen things up easy fixes around the hotel

This is a beautiful hotel with incredible views, but not quite five star as it boasts. We paid €6500 to stay in a beautiful room which was lovely but definitely not worth the money, it certainly did not resemble the beautiful pictures on their site. We did not like the fact that there is an open shower right beside the bed. It should have opaque glass instead of see-through. The breakfast , was just ok, but the food in the restaurant is shockingly a bad buffet in the evening. We had unwisely paid for half board. We alerted the manager as he was helping us with an issue with our safe and he apologised but we were offered no compensation for this and ate out seven of the ten nights we stayed there we eat outside of the hotel in lovely restaurants. The sun beds around the pool are full of stains as are the chairs in the dining area. Some staff were really lovely, particularly the cleaners and others overworked and not so friendly. The dining and Bar staff’s uniforms are shockingly bad, shabby and very cheap looking. The Manager needs a suit that fits him. We just felt that the customer service in general could’ve been better and a little more attentive to customers. The staff are visibly overworked and don’t notice things like lamps blown over around the pool or empty glasses sitting on table tables for very long times . We paid a lot of money for this holiday and have had the luxury of staying in five star hotels in Corfu and Santorini that were streets ahead of this and less in price. The views from our bedroom were absolutely stunning and the hotel in general is very peaceful and quiet. There are so many small things wrong that could be so easily fixed. Lots of areas need a touchup of paint the carpets need a deep clean. Staff themselves in general need to be a little bit more groomed. We asked for a late check out which we were delighted to get as the room was not booked the day we were leaving. But I thought it was a bit unusual to be asked to pay €300 for the luxury of staying in our room until 5.30pm after we had paid so much for our 10 days stay and couldn’t eat in the hotel at night which we prepaid for. They definitely have big competition in the newly opened Intercontinental 5 Star Hotel next door which is so much better and much cheaper.

We stayed here at the end of an island hopping holiday. It is on the side of a one way road and we had a room on the 4th floor with a fabulous sea view. The room was lovely although we’re not too keen on the wash basin and shower in the room idea but it was fine. Why the hotel has switches for lights, switches for curtains by the bed is beyond me. Tired on our first evening it took us about 20 minutes to work out how to switch all the lights off! As for the automatic curtain switch, we could just touch our curtain and it opened and closed itself. Breakfast was good, although the cappuccino could have been hotter. The hotel has 2 pools, one you can swim in and one that’s just a pool to cool off in. There’s a tiny gravel beach and concrete standing over the road with sunbeds. It’s not a private beach. Our biggest annoyance was there no where near enough sunbeds for everyone and the ones that are there are on top of each other. It’s such a shame as the pool is beautiful. It’s an easy walk into the town with its many tavernas. Tourist tax was 15€ per night, the highest of our whole stay in Greece. Pretty ok for 5 nights but we wouldn’t rush to stay again.
