This hotel is a beautiful luxury experience from the moment you step through the doors. The property, staff, rooms, and food are all excellent. We enjoyed walking the grounds and learning about its history Thank you for making our stay enjoyable.

Food & service let this stunning hotel down

Hotel & grounds are stunning. The service & food let the place down. Should have been advised the need to book dinner in advance. Was left with a 5pm sitting in the carriage house. This time ruined our evening plans with the kids, however, it is partly my own fault! We had a lovely waitress attend to us but I was very surprised at the prices considering the restaurant was the 19th hole for all the golfers so essentially a bar/bistro type place. My daughter ordered steak off kids menu & I ordered the steak frites. I was very surprised when both dishes came out looking very similar. Her steak was slightly smaller. She had broccoli & I got salad leaves & sauce. €18 vs €38. Same amount of fries. I took my first bite of the steak & between the smell & taste it was really awful. I have never in my life returned food. My husband who hates making a scene told me to send it back it was that bad. The waitress was so lovely & agreed about the smell. I ordered the burrata with truffle fries instead. I got a small plate with burrata & cherry tomatoes (€22) & plain fries. I said nothing. My husband ordered the pork chop (€36) & it came with no sides. He did really like it but felt it was very exp. Ordered one of my daughters the cookies & ice cream sandwich for dessert & we got the cheese board. She was given the chocolate cake & we were left cutting our cheese with spoons. We were charged for everything including the wrong dessert apart from my steak frites & a 10% service charge that was about 12.5% when you calculated it correctly. I didn’t even ask the waitress about it cos at this point I wanted to just go. That night (9pm) my youngest daughter unfortunately got sick in her bed all over her duvet. We rang reception to let them know. After a few minutes a knock came on the door & one of my daughters answered it to be handed bedsheets. I was stunned. The entire bedding was destroyed. The duvet itself was so wet. I couldn’t believe the service coming from a 5 star hotel. We didn’t bother ring back down. I was so annoyed at that point & the kids were tired so just stripped the bed & used our duvet to put over her & we used the sheets on our bed instead. We had to leave the bundle of smelly sheets etc on the floor in the room for the night. Also to note we were a family of 5 in interconnecting rooms & there were only 2 bath towels in each bathroom. A lack of attention to detail. Not good enough in a 5 star hotel. That was the only fault with the rooms I had. The beds were very comfortable & the views outside stunning. Breakfast the next morning was only ok. Food ok. I’ve had nicer plenty of times. My husband got the omelette which wasn’t seasoned. My Irish breakfast was fine. The bacon was overcooked & just crunchy & small portions. Kids loved the pancakes with Nutella & French toast. I am just really disappointed with the level of service we received throughout the stay. Had it just been the steak needing to be returned I wouldn’t be writing this review. It was for me our whole experience from start to finish. I left feeling very dissatisfied instead of rested & pampered. The kids loved it. They loved the pool & the buffet breakfast & the popcorn & drink they got a the movie theatre.

Poor overall booking experience, info for couples was poor with too many kids and large families

We went for a birthday with my partner. We were checked in but the lady never told us there was allot of children in the hotel, for example it would have helped us to know the times the children use the Spa area. It was more like a Butlins holiday camp for kids. We spent about 10 mins there and left. The reception area at the Spa wasn't that friendly either. We also kept being put sitting with families of kids in both the restaurant and the breakfast areas. Why would they keep doing that? There wasn't hot water in the rooms bath either (the sink and shower was fine) we called but were told it couldn't not be looked at until the morning. I think it's more a 4 star experience with 5 star facilities over all.

At Fairmont, we strive to provide a superior service experience for every customer; therefore your feedback is very important to us. As I am sure you are aware your stay was during the mid term break and as a result the hotel would have catered to more families than at other times of the year. It is not our policy to discuss the age profile of guests at a particular time unless asked specifically to do so. Did you discuss this with anyone while at the hotel? I will also investigate what the issue was with the hot water in your room as I have not received any reports of there being an issue.. Thank you once again for taking the time to post your review. Pleasant Stay

We enjoyed our trip to the hotel. The room was comfortable and the grounds are very pleasant. One strange occurrence. We went to the Carriage House restaurant around 4.30 for a late lunch/ early dinner. We were told it was booked out despite many tables clearly empty. The lady said earliest for a table would be 8.30. We went back to the hotel and did not want to eat in Kathleen's Kitchen. A staff member seemed surprised when we told them the Carriage House was booked out. Within 10 mins he had booked us a table for 5.30 in the Carriage House. As we dined at the Carriage House, it still had many empty tables. Unusual.

Dear beechpark Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on your recent stay at Carton House, A Fairmont Managed Hotel. Especially for your kind words regarding the grounds and the comfort of your room. I have also investigated what happened with the Carriage House as it seemed out of character for the team to be have like this without a good reason and it appears that they had a large group booking that were due to arrive that evening at 5pm and they did not arrive. The group would have taken over the entire restaurant space up to 8pm hence why my colleague at the door told you that there was no availability until 8.30pm (this would allow time for the restaurant to be cleaned and reset). We only knew they were not going to arrive when at 5.15pm they had not arrived and we called them. They had forgotten to cancel but were not coming. The bookings were re-opened immediately which is why my colleague was able to book a table for you. This would also explain why the restaurant was not full as we had no availability due to the large group and unfortunately could not replace that many people at such short notice. I do apologize for what I can totally understand would have seemed like a strange occurrence as you said but I trust that given what I have explained above it will make a little more sense. Loved Carton House!

Was my first visit to Carton House & I loved it. My husband has played golf & stayed a few times and thought I’d enjoy a birthday treat. We live in Dublin so a 45 minute commute was fantastic, the drive in through the grounds are impressive. We parked up & received a really warm and friendly welcome from the guys at the door. We were checked in efficiently and headed to our room. It was modern & spotless. Bed was extremely comfortable & the shower was great. We ate lunch in the Carriage house & as it was so cosy & welcoming we decided to have dinner there too. Breakfast in Kathleen’s Kitchen was a delight! We loved it, wasn’t formal & stuffy but casual and welcoming. Great choice of food on offer & service was excellent. Have already booked a return visit.
