Beautiful location but hotel needs revamp

The highlight of our trip to Cradle Mountain Lodge was a private guided walk around Crater Lake with Stan, the activities manager. We learnt so much about local fauna and flora as well as local history. Highly recommended! We also very much enjoyed our hot stone massages at the spa where the lovely Senna made us feel very nurtured. On a less positive note this is not a luxury destination, the facilities in the rooms definitely do not warrant the hefty price tag (no internet, no central heating, worn furnishings). The staff were friendly but seemed to lack training, service was chaotic at times. Food was average and very expensive (minimum spend of $105 per head in the Highland restaurant, not including drinks).

Hi Samuel, Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent stay at Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the private guided walk with Stan and your hot stone massages with Senna. It is always gratifying to know that our guests appreciate the natural beauty and the dedicated service provided by our team. However, we acknowledge your concerns regarding the accommodation facilities and the level of service you experienced. While our lodge aims to offer a unique experience reflective of its natural surroundings, we understand that expectations for luxury can vary. We take your comments about staff training and service seriously and will continue to focus on enhancing our guest experience. Regarding your dining experience, our Highland Restaurant offers a curated menu that reflects local produce, and we appreciate your feedback on pricing and quality as we strive to meet our guests' expectations. We value your insights and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

Overpriced. Under delivered. Location the only good thing.

Massively overpriced for what’s on offer. Old and tired accommodation. Poor service and dreadful food. The public Tavern was okay. Pizza was good. Room rate should be around $250 a night. Breakfast was powered eggs and sandwich loaf white bread. Like being on school camp.

Hi Robyn, Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your stay didn’t meet expectations. This isn’t the experience we aim to provide, and we appreciate you highlighting the areas that fell short. While it’s great to know you enjoyed the Tavern and the pizza, we’re disappointed that other aspects of your visit missed the mark. Your comments about the accommodation, service, and breakfast options have been shared with the relevant teams so we can address them directly.

Great location and wilderness feel, but you’re mostly paying for the setting

Cradle Mountain Lodge is all about location. It’s conveniently within walking distance (about 5 minutes) of the Interpretation Centre / Ranger Station shuttle pick-up, and right on the Enchanted Walk (a 20-minute, 1.1 km boardwalk stroll) where you might spot pademelons or even a wombat if you’re lucky. The lodge also overlooks a pretty pond and feels very much immersed in nature. We stayed in a Pencil Pine Chalet Cabin, which was cozy with two armchairs facing a gas fireplace, a small fridge, Nespresso machine, kettle, and a complimentary bottle of wine. Cellular service worked fine, but there was no Wi-Fi in the room (only available at main reception). The cabin walls were thin, and unfortunately, we could hear a baby crying through the night. Of note, the pipes can freeze, leaving no hot water in the morning. It would have been nice if staff had warned us about this in advance. The hotel can sell you a combined 24-hour visitor pass and shuttle ticket for $30 AUD per person, but if you’re staying more than a day or visiting other national parks, it’s cheaper to buy from the Visitor Centre instead: Vehicle pass: $95 AUD (covers up to 8 people for 2 months) Shuttle pass: $15 AUD per person for 3 days (kids under 18 ride free but still need a park pass) Note that neither the Ranger Centre nor the shuttle itself sells tickets or passes. We did several walks. Dove Lake Circuit, Ronny Creek to Waldheim to Dove Lake, and the Marion Lookout Walk. The Ronny Creek area in the late afternoon gave us the best chance to see wombats, and the Marion Lookout trail was the most scenic (can start from either Ronny Creek or Dove Lake shuttle stop). Breakfast was good with plenty of hot and cold options, but lunch and dinner choices were limited. The Highland Restaurant was overpriced and underwhelming (reservations required), while the Tavern Bar had better food but was still expensive. Overall, this is the best-located hotel at Cradle Mountain to be right in the wilderness and within easy reach of the shuttle system. If you value convenience and a nature-immersive experience, it’s worth it, but know you’re paying a premium mainly for the location and atmosphere.

Hi Krawner, Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed review. It’s wonderful to hear you enjoyed the beautiful location and the chance to experience the wildlife and walking tracks right from the lodge. We appreciate your feedback regarding the cabin noise, hot water, and dining options, it’s very helpful and will be shared with our team as we continue to make improvements. I’m glad you were able to make the most of your time exploring Cradle Mountain and hope we can welcome you back again in the future for another visit immersed in nature.

Lovely location and an ok lodge with no WiFi in the rooms

Great location and lovely walking trails. The afternoon person at reception seemed bored and said we had to book a time for breakfast; we said 7 am. Got to breakfast the next day and they said we were booked for 8.30 am and had not been booked for the following day. The breakfast buffet was weak. No egg station. No granola that i could find. My room was fine. Heated by a gas fire which was ok. The rest of the amenities in the room were fine with the exception that there was no Wi-Fi in the room only in the main building. And could not get into the main building to use the Wi-Fi until the breakfast service opened at 7 am! Stayed two nights and was pleased that the room was serviced in between, that was appreciated. Ate one dinner in the bar which was quite good and in the breakfast restaurant for dinner which we had to book. Dinner in the restaurant was ok but i did not feel worth the cost.

Hi Mike, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed the location, walking trails, and that your room was comfortable and well serviced during your stay. We’re sorry to hear about the confusion with your breakfast booking and that some aspects of the buffet didn’t meet expectations. Your comments about the Wi-Fi access and dining experience have been noted and will be shared with the team for improvement. We appreciate your time in providing this review.

Subpar service in beautiful surrounds

The beautiful surrounds and easy access to the many gorgeous walks of Cradle Mountain are enough to turn a blind eye to what is a poorly run accommodation that punches well below it's price point. The cozy lobby is unfortunately poorly staffed and we often found ourselves at the end of a line waiting to arrange any of a number of bookings. Everyday, each guest is required to: book a time for breakfast; dinner if you want to eat at the restaurant; and tickets for the park. In addition to usual questions, check in and out, etc. It was a big ask for what was usually a solitary staff member. We often felt like an imposition when trying to arrange paid services during our stay. Many of the staff are lovely and helpful but are let down by a few disinterested team members. One of whom left a busy breakfast service and returned smelling of cannabis. A wood fireplace is the saving grace for fairly dated rooms in desperate need of a refresh. Unfortunately the beautiful view in our roomwas hidden behind a broken blind that we couldn't pull up. We stayed 6 nights and did have to specially request our towels and gowns be washed. The activities are managed by the knowledgeable Stan who runs a number of guided walks and wildlife spotting tours which were fantastic. They unfortunately only run 5 out of 7 days a week and are a challenge to book. The website suggests emailing in advance however ours weeks prior was left without a reply. On check in, we were told "there is 100% chance the answer is no" when we inquired about tours but when we asked again later that day we were able to book in directly with Stan. There are two food options: the Highland restaurant offering a 'fine dining' option (if you can get in, we could only score a booking on one of our six nights); and a pub style tavern serving average pub food at a price point befitting the location. We got caught out after a long day of hiking, returning to find the kitchen at the tavern closes at 8pm - not an easy piece of information to locate, the website states "midday to late". Having arrived at ten past eight we were informed 'the kitchen was closed; there are no other options for food within a >1 hour drive and there was no way we could have anything to eat.' They were happy to sell us some wine though! All of these inadequacies are forgiven when you wander outside and are treated to the view of a wombat in the button grass. My advice is to go to Cradle Mountain, but stay somewhere else.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review. We’re very glad to hear you enjoyed the stunning surroundings, wildlife, and guided walks with Stan — he’ll be thrilled to receive your kind words. We’re sorry, however, that other parts of your stay did not meet expectations, particularly around service levels, maintenance, and dining options. Please rest assured that our team does not permit or tolerate any form of drug use. We appreciate your feedback, as it helps us improve both our operations and guest experience moving forward.
