Nice hotel, great location for the lake and hiking up the hill. Plenty to see and do at Lake Tekapo, but consider staying in Lake Pukaki too. It’s less touristy! Not far from Mount Cook. It’s a good road and we drove it several times (but do check its open if the weather turns). Not a posh hotel, but good size room. Hotel restaurant didn’t look special, but you can walk over the road and there are plenty of options (they’ll help you with booking if its busy period too - helpful staff).

This is a 3 star hotel in a 5 star location which is a blemish on the Peppers brand. It is a 1990’s hotel which needs a renovation. You don’t renovate a bathroom by putting in a new bathtub. Your tiles and floors are old. Your shower screen has gaps that leak water into the toilet area. There is no safe deposit box. The bedroom layout is wrong, power points and coffee maker are inconveniently positioned and room is very small with a noisy air-conditioner. I am not sure why there is a half painted head board in the room. This has to be the worst Peppers I have stayed in. It is worth half the rate they are charging.

We paid nearly 400 bucks for the smallest room in history, the worst part is that the walls weren't even painted, they just had a coat of undercoat roughly slapped on. They did warn us the room was small at reception but when i bought up the unfinished paint job the staff were apathetic. I have read some other reviews and there is a common theme of the room being too small for the price, Peppers always respond with that they could upgrade you to a better room ( for more money!!) seems like they are running out of excuses for renting rooms they know are too small at a high price...at the very least reduce the rate to reflect the room and please don't rent out rooms that you are still painting!! The sleep and go excuse is pretty thin too because people don't understand what that means and when they pay that much they expect a room bigger than a cupboard! Breakfast is a rip off too so head into town for breakfast if you are brave enough to stay here.

These upgrade options for larger room types incur additional fees as would happen in most all hotels. We came to Peppers (indeed to Lake Tekapo) essentially by accident. Our planned trip had taken us up the west coast of the South Island through Franz Josef but SH 6 was closed due to slips and there was no road to get there until it was fixed, so when we couldn't wait any longer to see if the road would open we canceled our motel in Franz Josef and rerouted our trip east through South Canterbury ending up in Lake Tekapo. We booked Peppers online just a few days before we stayed there and while we did secure accommodation the room was extremely small - a fact that the clerk on check-in made sure we knew! The facility is a resort and most of the better rooms (lets face it they were all bigger if not better!) had a view of the lake. In five decades of travel I cannot remember a smaller hotel room although it was clean and the bed was comfortable and king sized. I think it was a room that would have made up a second bedroom to one of the bigger resort rooms as needed. The resort is well situated but Lake Tekapo is little more than a village and there are few facilities there at least in the shoulder season. Because of our short notice booking we could not find any space on the astronomy tour which we would have loved, but we had a good restaurant meal near the lake.

Don’t recommend staying here - overpriced and underwhelming. The room we had for two people barely had space to accommodate our suitcases and my wife got bitten by bedbugs (!) during our stay. Find a different option for your time in Tekapo. The staff are also unprofessional and not particularly oriented to caring for guests. Also, who starts doing housekeeping at 8AM? This was another disruption to our stay.
