Disappointing Stay – No Air Conditioning, Poor Conditions, and Unprofessional Service

From the moment we arrived, it was clear this hotel did not meet basic expectations. A vase of flowers on the front desk sat in dirty water, the lobby was cramped and uncomfortably hot, and the front desk staff were visibly sweating—an early red flag. After receiving our room keys, we walked through an equally stifling hallway and discovered there was no air conditioning in any of our rooms. We soon learned that the entire hotel's A/C system was down, making the stay nearly unbearable in the heat. The pool setup was confusing and inconvenient. Although the pool was located on the first floor and had a nearby door, guests were required to access it from the second floor and walk down stairs. Even more concerning, the bartender was so overheated that he served drinks shirtless—an unprofessional and uncomfortable experience for guests. Our group, part of a culinary tour, had reserved seven rooms. Within two hours of checking in, we informed the front desk that the conditions were unacceptable and that we would not be staying. We requested a refund, but were denied, as the hotel manager claimed that everything was “just fine.” Overall, this was a frustrating, uncomfortable, and disappointing experience. We would not recommend this hotel to others.

Dear Sir or Madam, Thank you for taking the time to share your comments with us. However, we would like to clarify a few important points regarding your stay. Firstly, our air conditioning system was working perfectly during your stay. Of the seven air conditioners in the rooms you booked, two were incorrectly set, but this was quickly identified and corrected. We checked the temperature using a laser gun, which indicated an average temperature of 72°F in the five functional rooms. After adjustment, the other two rooms displayed a similar temperature. Regarding the reception area, our employees adhere to a strict dress code, wearing a uniform consisting of a polo shirt to ensure a professional and pleasant appearance. It is true that during busy periods and heat waves, the temperature in the lobby may temporarily seem high due to the frequent comings and goings of guests. However, this feeling of heat is only temporary during the day. We regret that you have made unfounded accusations aimed at damaging the reputation of our establishment following our refusal to refund your reservation. We would like to inform our customers that, to date, our air conditioning system is working perfectly. In the event of a malfunction, we are committed to informing our customers out of respect and professionalism. With all due respect, Madam, Sir, please accept our best regards.

The staff are great-from the guys and lady who man the bar to the front of house ladies as well as the very thorough and hard working cleaning lady. They are always working and have good communication with each other and with guests. The pool is an oasis in the city and never too crowded. The drinks are varied and well made. We ate in Don Pepe three times and one of us always had to have the carbonara because it is soooo good. More hard working staff there too. The rooms are nicely decorated and clean. I would prefer a coffee machine- a lot of four star hotels have them as well as a selection of teas. Bed is comfortable, views are great and we were asked which view we would like. All in all, this is a hotel I would highly recommend.

Loved my room! It was light, had a great view!had all the amenities I could ask for although the bed was a little hard. The staff was great! I recommend eating at the in-house restaurant. Their food is amazing! I recommend take the ferry, which leaves every half hour, over to Toulon where you can walk around the ancient city, shops and dine in the cafes. Now the downside, the hotel is located in an area that has gone downhill. Lots of shops were closed and had moved away to a different part of town. There were groups/gangs of men hanging about at the numerous bars drinking and being very loud. I saw two abandoned cars that had been burned down to a melted mass just sitting there. The hotel has a large metal grate/fence around it with a private gate to enter and exit. When I asked for a restaurant recommendation the front desk associate said to only go to the restaurant in the hotel.Honestly, if this hotel was in a better part of town I’d stay there for all my business needs, but I don’t really see us going back again.

I am not really a fan of Mercure-Hotels in Germany, but this one is probably the best bang for the buck you can get! Especially AUDREY, LAVINIA and TIMOTHEE did everything they could to comfort us. They were extremely helpful, lovely and totally attentive to all our needs. Sometimes a good team makes a good hotel! Will be back in a flash!
