We spent 3 nights in an Executive Suite using Chengdu as a base to see the Giant Buddha in Leshan and the Panda Research Centre. The Mercure Chengdu Huapaifang is unusual in that the entrance to the hotel is towards the rear of the property so that when you turn up you're really not sure if you are at the right spot!! There is some signage at the front of the property facing the street but it's not that clear.
Reception staff were excellent and extremely helpful (especially Fiona) assisting us with information on how to get to Leshan by train to see the Giant Buddha which was a real highlight of our trip to China. Without their help I don't think we would have had the confidence to go to the station on the day and buy our tickets with the local Chinese. We had bought our other train tickets in advance on line from Travel China Guide and had them delivered to the hotel.
The breakfast area was very good and whilst we found enough food to our liking to get us off to a good start each day, it did mainly cater for the local Chinese tourists/business people.
Our Executive Suite on the 26th floor was huge and very comfortable. It was extremely quiet, the bathroom area was superb and met all our expectation and having two toilets was a bonus. The cleaning staff were very friendly and most accommodating if we needed any extra supplies for our tea and coffee making facilities. It is very good value. There is no restaurant in the hotel for evening meals but just across the busy road in front of the hotel is an area with small shops and a number of restaurants. We felt very comfortable walking around the area at night mingling with the locals trying to work out the menus - we were usually always able to find someone with some English to assist us if we got into trouble.
Our 3 day stay went very quickly and smoothly and we would highly recommend the Mercure if you are looking for a hotel inChengdu.
