It‘s a nice place, quiet and very well maintenant. The hotel personel is very kind and pay attention for the guests. The food is delicius and the rooms are nice and clean. The only one small suggestion is to offer more exotic fruits. Thanks to all the stuff for the fantastic hollidays.

Paradise on earth! Everything about this resort is just perfect if you are looking for a quiet get away. The villas are amazing, the food incredible and the staff so friendly and accommodating. The marine life around the island is abundant making the daily snorkelling an absolute treat. We are already counting down the days to our next visit.

Good, but no as good as before

Based on our good experiences, we returned to the island, but were a little bit disappointed this time. The bungalow and room service are great. The new bar has no flair and ask ridiculous prices for food and drinks. The food in general is very basic. Lots of curries, but almost all the same every day. The reef is still good for snorkelling, but suffers from construction activities in the area.

Dear MartinbQ9221RT, First, please allow us to thank you for choosing our resort, Banyan Tree Maldives Vabbinfaru for your vacation. We read with great concern the issues you had during your stay, please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience this has caused you. Rest assured that it has been routed to the departments concerned to take into consideration and action. Again, thank you for taking the time to bring those very relevant matters to us. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. Sincerely, Hery Kuswoyo General Manager

Wonderful Island with good reef and friendly staff

We spend a really great week on Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru. What stands out in this resort is that the staff is extremely friendly in a relaxed and unforced kind of way and really wants to make each guests stay memorable. After a quick 25min speedboat transfer we arrived in the early morning before 7am to a nice welcome on an island that looks as fabulous as on the pictures. We got our wished for Villa and the staff prepared beach loungers and had a complimentary breakfast for us in the time it took for the villa to be cleaned. The island has lush vegetation and in the northeast monsoon great beaches on the west and north west of the island. The east was eroded at our time of stay in mid February. The resort uses a sand pump to try to restore the eroded parts of the beach. The water of the lagoon has different shades of turquoise that look unreally beautiful. Our villa on the sunset side (Number 4) was perfect for us. A good, broad beach directly at the villa , privacy on the terrace due to vegetation on both sides, loungers, a wonderful beach pavilion and a hammock for two. The bed is big and comfy with a great view of the beach and ocean from the bed. We also enjoyed the little side nook for relaxing during the day. The open bathroom garden features a pool and a whirlpool and an outdoor shower. We really enjoyed the pool and whirlpool each day for a quick relaxation after snorkelling, during rainy hours or in the night to soak and watch the stars. We loved the natural materials used in the villa and prefer this style to more modern designs. The villa was well maintained and the only sign of the age are mosaic tiles falling off the pool that are cleaned away quickly. A big thank you to Khaleel to keep our villa so beautifully with cleaning twice a day. Each time the sand was cleaned away from the villa, the terrace, garden and the pool, the room was tidied and cleaned, the bed made and the fresh water restocked. We were on half board since we normally do not eat lunch and drink mostly water during the day. The villa water was restocked with several litres of waters each day and we could get as much as we wanted on request. Water was also provided free or charge with the meals. The fabulous breakfast was served in the main restaurant a few steps from the beach. We especially enjoyed the egg station (Thank you Prosanta!) with me opting most days for a plain Egg Benedict and my husband going for an omelette with onions, tomatoes, chilli and sausage. We made ourself a plate of fruits each day and if my beloved mangoes were not already part of the selection they were always fetched from the kitchen for us and prepared on the spot. Most days we also opted for dragon fruit, melons and pineapple. I also enjoyed the small selection of Dim Sum (2 different each day), the Mas huni, roasted potatoes, hashbrown, noodles and one varying curry. Also there was a cooler with freshly prepared fruit juice (our favourites were orange and watermelon) , a selection of yoghurts and some olives and salad choices. Tea and coffee could be ordered and there was complimentary sparkling wine. Thank you Lynn for always greeting and placing each guest with admirable enthusiasm and quickly memorising our favourite drinks. During Breakfast time from around 9am-10am ladies from the spa offered complimentary head, shoulder and neck massages. They are highly skilled and we extremely enjoyed those minutes. Khop khun kha! Even though we loved the breakfast massages we did not book a Spa treatment since the price point is not appropriate in our opinion (240$ for 90 minutes Thai massage). There are discounts available if you book multiple in a package. Most of the days we skipped lunch. One day we ordered a nice curry to our villa with accompanying mango lassis and enjoyed it in our pavilion on the beach. On our last day we went to the Japanese restaurant Maadi Hiyaa for lunch. A discount is provided on the menu prices when on a meal plan. We enjoyed vegetable tempura, prawn maki, teriyaki chicken and Wagyu beef accompanied with beer and finished with a nice signature gin cocktail. The food was very good and the architecture of the restaurant and bar is stunning. It is build with wood and bamboo on the pier in the north and the roof resembles a huge ray. The bamboo supports are artfully placed , there are two sea water pools and there are different nice seating and lounging options including nets above the lagoon where stingrays swim below you if you are lucky. It can be a bit windy at Maadi Hiya but you can choose the lower placed loungers on the wind sheltered side also for lunch and dinner. Dinner in the main restaurant alternated between a 4 course set menu with several choices and buffet. The usual buffet choices were good but not very numerous. There was some bread, a soup, some salads. Then there were always some varying western choices like Mac and cheese or coq au vin, some Asian style fried dishes like noodles, okra , fried asparagus, spicy fish and about 2 curries and some samosas and Indian bread. The highlight was the grill with a varying choice of meat, seafood, fish and vegetables to be freshly grilled. We loved the marinated white snapper so try that when its offered. For deserts some nice cakes (not too sweet), some puddings and cookies, fresh fruit and once in the week there was ice cream at the buffet. We loved the home made sorbets especially the mango. The first evening on the set menu we really enjoyed the starter (assorted gyoza) and the desert (coconut creme brule) but the soup (vegetable cream soup/chicken corn soup) and main (reef fish curry /chicken drums sticks) were only ok, lacking spices in our personal opinion. We voiced that reservation and from that day on we were always asked which alternative we wished. We said we love authentically flavoured Indian and Thai food especially curries and also wanted to experience authentic Maldivian food. So in the following days we got prepared special for us: Thai chicken, vegetable and prawn curries, Tom Yam Gung soup, Som Tam Thai Papaya Salad, Maldivian Garudiya soup, Maldivian curries, spicy Indian chicken and paneer curries, freshly made Parantha and the special Maldivian chili to spice it up even more. Thank you so much to all the waiters and cooks especially Aiman and Prosanta to make that happen and provide us with the food we love. We are very happy that the staff provided us with the food we wished for and this is really outstanding service. While we understand that the set menu and buffet is tailored to offer something acceptable for everyone I still think that some choices could be a little more boldly flavoured. During our stay all generally offered soups were plain unflavoured cream kind of soups , here I believe also other guest would love more inspired choices with adding garnishes or espuma for texture or offering specials with distinct flavours like the excellent Garudiya or Tom Yam variants we got. There are two bars, the Naiboli bar on the beach nearby the main restaurant and the bar at the wonderful Japanese restaurant Maadi Hiya. The second one has the more spectacular scenery and has some interesting special cocktails but the Naiboli bar has the broader selection of classical cocktails and drinks. Our favourites only available at Naiboli Bar were Mango Lassis (11$) and the special Mojitos made with sorbet (14$ - with Mango, Mint or Citrus sorbet - called Mango Mojito, Vabbinfaru Mojito and Citrus Mojito). Cocktail prices at Naiboli ranged from reasonable 14$ to 17$. Signature cocktails at Maadi Hiya are slightly overpriced at 24$ but a small selection of standard AI cocktails are also offered there and can also be bought for guest not on AI (Like Cosmopolitan for 14$). The cocktails were delicious and the service quick at both bars. Thank you! The sand on Vabbinfaru is white and beautiful and since the reef is relatively far out there is plenty of lagoon to bath in. You need to be a little careful were you step since there was quite a lot of broken coral on the beach and in the water, there are stingrays in the lagoon and also a little further in some live corals (can be spotted by the darker turquoise color). The water in the lagoon is deep enough to comfortably swim and the provided personal swimming mats are a great idea to float along. We immensely enjoyed the snorkelling on the Vabbinfaru and Dhawa Ihuru reefs. There is a huge diversity of marine life including more living and colourful corals then we expected. The weather was unseasonable fickle for February with a mix of sun, clouds and rain and strong winds around 30km/h-40km/h throughout our stay. This meant waves, sometimes strong currents, choppy water and reduced visibility. In combination with the really big reef of Vabbinfaru we were careful to choose which spots we snorkelled on when, but in the end snorkelled the full round on both islands broken down in several parts. During our time the current went from east to west on both sides of the reefs at Ihuru and Vabbinfaru. The reef on both islands is an ellipse and far larger in the western part. Vabbinfarus reef is further out and far bigger then Ihurus. This means when going the large way to the westernmost point the second leg going back from the turn is mostly against the current. On Vabbinfaru there is a reef access point in the north at the Japanese restaurant and three in the south on both sides of the arrival jetty and one by the wooden platform. At high tide its possible to find a way over the reef roof in the west if its necessary. The easiest snorkelling and some nice live coral and fishes can be found when going in in one of the reef entries on the left or right of the arrival jetty and going clockwise with the current to the exit behind the wooden platform. We saw sharks and turtles in this section besides a lot of smaller fish and nice and varied corals. Sometimes depending on the current a short stretch of this part had no visibility when getting into the sand pumped by the sand pump. In general visibility had been limited due to the choppy waters throughout our stay. From the entry point left of the arrival jetty going anti clockwise to the Japanese restaurants there were some strong currents and some large schools of fish but the corals are mostly dead. Going from the Japanese Restaurant anti clockwise to the west there is a now no longer maintained metal coral garden structure looking like huge under water petals called the Lotus , there are lots of fish here. The corals continue to be mostly dead for around 100 meters but going west that changes drastically with some large stretches of really beautiful and varied corals in the huge western part of the reef. You can exit again when reaching the point before the wooden platform. There are complimentary boats going between Ihuru and Vabbinfaru approximately every 2h. On Ihuru the snorkelling is far easier and there are more people in the water. The reef is super close to the beach in the eastern part and the corals are alive and dense all around. For easiest snorkelling enter at the reef access east of the pier and let yourself drift with the current clockwise until the third entry point on the west of the pier. We swam with a turtle here and there are really huge and bountiful anemones. We mostly went in one further entry point to the east and first went a little against the current to the above mentioned entrance point and then drifted around. We also tried the northern half of the reef. Here you have no reef access points on the way. We went in at the easternmost point and went anti clockwise until the westernmost. There was some strong current and waves here during our stay but also live corals and nice large schools of fish. We very much appreciate the work of the marine lab on both islands. They currently have 3 staff members: Nick the boss, Henry a marine biologist from England and Hood a former policemen from Male. All three are very passionate about their work in preserving and regrowing the corals and protecting marine life in the area and answered many questions. I asked about the currently ongoing El Niño and there was some hope from Nick that this time the Maldives are spared the worst of the bleaching and might get some more years to regrow (fingers crossed). I went to the really interesting complimentary Marine Talk by Hood and joined the also complimentary Weekly Citizen Science Snorkel with Henry on Vabbinfaru. There we looked together for certain fish species. We also went to the reef Cleanup (again complimentary - alternating weekly between Ihuru and Vabbinfaru) with Henry on Ihuru and found and removed some pincushions, at this point we did not see any crown of thorns. Sometimes the marine lab also offers complimentary cleanup excursions by boat to other reefs in the area. Make sure to check out the Marine Lab schedule on both islands when you arrive. We also booked the night snorkelling after sunset with the Marine Lab at Vabbinfaru’s reef and had a wonderful time. Everyone was equipped with a strong torchlight and the rules were explained: point the torch always down so not to attract needle fish, don’t directly point the light in the eyes of sharks, circling a spot means there is something interesting. Hood was our guide and he pointed out so much marine life that we would have missed on our own. We saw all 4 turtles living on the reef, we saw giant trevallies aggressively hunting and eating smaller fish (kind of mean), a bunch of sharks, a nurse shark still sleeping in his cave (the question remains when do they not sleep), a lobster with huge antenna, a lion fish, a squid, a moral eel that unfortunately quickly hid and on the way back in the lagoon a sting ray. It was a really fabulous magical experience with a guide for just the two of us and that at a great price point (55$ pP). The other paid activity we booked and loved was parasailing. A big thank you to the water sports teams on both islands especially our captain Jill to make this activity possible even though we had non ideal weather and winds. The sailing and landing on the boat was really smooth and the views of the islands, reefs and also the construction sites breathtaking. The price is also really ok at 100$ pP. In general the islands location in North Male Atoll is really practical due to the really short speedboat transfer from Male (25min). The downside is that you can see Male a little (we don’t mind) but you can also see 4 construction sides of new islands at the moment. One is quite near, between Ihuru and Baros and you can clearly see the excavators working. One other a little more to the north was not very visible during the day but was the brightest island at night, we called it floodlight island. For us this was not a real problem besides the fear that this much construction might be not good for marine life in the area. I just wanted to point it out to people searching for the Lost on an Island feel. We had an evening flight from Male shortly after 7pm and the boat collected us at 4pm. We had to check out at 12am since the villa was directly reassigned. The island was fully booked during our stay. We spend the time in-between lounging at the Japanese restaurant and were provided complimentary with ice cubes and water and had a great lunch there. Afterwards we could freshen up and shower in the beautiful public bathrooms by the restaurants equipped with toiletries and fresh towels. We had a very nice goodbye with handmade origami made from palm leaves and friendly waving staff. A big thank you also to the general manager Hery for making our villa wish come true and for always asking for feedback and quickly acting on it. Thank you to all of the great staff at Vabbinfaru and Ihuru who made our stay so special . Everyone was friendly, smiling and happy to chat about there homes and their work which helped us to learn more about the Maldives and the Island life. We would love to come back one day to Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru. Shukuriyyaa
