My sister and I visited the Plaza for high tea at the palm court for my birthday, we had a great time. Everything was wonderful and our server Porfirio made it better, with his warm, kind, uplifting, happy pleasant personality. We will absolutely be back and request Porfirio. Thank you.

Had such a nice time at the Plaza for tea. Our server Porfirio was wonderful. He had great recommendations and made my daughter feel very special. It’s not a cheap experience but it was one we will remember!

After enduring too much time spent in the 15-degree winter cold, I decided to treat myself to Afternoon Tea. What better place than the legendary Royal Palm Court, right? Apparently Afternoon Tea is not as one would find it in the UK—it runs from 11am to 4pm, is strictly set by timed seatings, and not a minute after. The offerings were traditional, but I never had the chance to find out. I was there at 4, and the last seating had been served. I was told that I could eat only at the bar from a light dinner menu. The bar was crowded, and my injured knee would not allow me to take my place in a raised chair. In fact, I was walking with a cane. The maitre d’ Denis Dumont suggested I have a meal at the lobby restaurant, which I knew only serves guests. It wasn’t busy at all, he said, and shouldn’t be a problem. The door security requested my room key, and I explained that I was sent there from the maître d’ at the Palm Court. He refused me admittance; from the get-go his attitude was more like a bouncer at a downtown dive than someone working at The Plaza. He refused to make eye contact with me, a smallish, older woman who won’t submit to male disrespect. Especially at a five-star hotel. I asked for a manager and he refused. Finally, I asked a nearby staff person to go to the Palm Court and bring the maitre d’ over, to verify what he had told me to do. Denis was not present at that moment, and another man, with no knowledge of the situation, came over. The incident escalated. I’ve had a great deal of experience with luxury hotels, and did public relations at a Mobil Five-Star Hotel. This security person was not the kind of hospitality representative who should be doing a front-of-the house job. I finally fetched Denis and he confirmed that he sent me over. I asked for an apology. Not a chance. The security man’s attitude, again, was thuggish and dismissive. He refused to make eye contact—which tacitly acknowledges the other person and makes them feel heard—the entire time of this encounter. At that point the situation was beyond repair. I will never return to The Plaza. Two things: Denis should have accompanied me to the lobby eatery to bypass the typical security experience. And the security man should have been polite and sent someone over to the Palm Court to talk to Denis. I thought all hotel staff were trained to handle any kind of situation with grace. Not here.

Came to celebrate our friends birthday with afternoon tea. From the start our meal our service was impeccable! Our server Fariz was amazing and very attentive. He made our experience so special. 10/10 would return!
