This was our second stay at the fairmont, but it's been over a decade since our last visit. In that time, quality has declined significantly. The hotel is now owned by a Korean financial services firm that as far as I can tell cares more about squeezing every penny out of the property than about delivering quality. The room we were in was beat up and old. Lot's of wear and tear. The AC smelled like mildew which was very problematic. The front desk offered to change the intake filter, which did nothing to fix the problem. We were offered another room, but the staff wouldn't confirm whether the other room was any newer or on the same central AC system. We stayed put as a result. Since our family couldn't sleep with the mildew smell when the system was running, we were forced to leave it off for most of our stay. This made it difficult to get rest as other guests are loud and we were facing the pool and the room was hot. Overall, we stayed in a beat up out dated room, got less sleep than we do at home, and on top of that, paid an arm and a leg for simple amenities and supplies sold on the property. The staff did offer to refund our resort fees, which I declined. I'm not interested in handouts from a firm that looks at every problem and solution as an issue of money. What I wanted was a pleasant stay in a up to date, and healthy, room. This is obviously something the Fairmont Orchid, or rather, Mirae Asset Global Investments, isn't interested in delivering. The true customers of a property such as this which is owned by a financial services company are the investors, not the end customers. That was made abundantly clear during our stay. The only reason to stay at this hotel is to get direct quick access to the pool and beach, which are nice. But the pool gets quite dirty by the end of each day with heaps of sunscreen and peeling skin from sunburned patrons floating in the pool. I suggest an early swim. If you value your money, and the quality you receive for spending your hard earned money, skip this hotel.

We are cure checking out and cannot say enough amazing things about this resort. Great food, beautiful location, comfortable rooms, and to top it off, the most amazing staff. Every person we encountered treated us like family. I could have sat to chat with them for hours. They gave us local tips for things to see and do, and they seem so uplifted in their work and each other. The service was impeccable and it’s good to hear they are supported at every level by the Fairmont brand. Not every visitor seemed kind to the staff but man, do they deserve love and respect because they go out of their way for visitors.

Wonderuful place....just make sure you aren't sharing the resort with a large conference group

Very enjoyable...just ended up having a large conference group (400-500 people) arrive midway thru the stay and was unfortunately not a great experience during their stay..way too many people and impacted everything from pool lounge chairs, excessive drinking and noise and just overall sense of tranquility. Before their arrival and after their departure...would have given this place a 9 out of 10...wonderful staff, great location

We had a great relaxing stay at the Fairmont Orchid. The Fairmont Gold staff were great, friendly, and very accommodating. They made our trip feel special and we were welcomed and felt comfortable. Lovely water bottle gifts that came in handy when sightseeing. The hotel grounds were lovely, too. Beautiful beach and lagoon. We will return next time we are visiting the Big Island.
