On my hotels to AVOID list the Sofitel in Mt Video is amongst the top five. Post 23hr flight Doha- Madrid- Mt Video I was looking forward to a good rest. There was a tropical cyclone upon arrival thus a dramatic entrance of fighting doors that had to be closed by force. My ocean front room 307 was in pole position for the wind and rain. One side of the window was properly sealed and the left side not. The noise was deafening as the wind came through the badly sealed ocean front window. The hotel surely knew this as they did not send someone when I complained. I asked twice to talk to the manager who avoided me. I found her and she conceded I could leave the hotel without penalty. I found a room through trip advisor and left for the lovely boutique Hotel Constanero. I have an ocean front room and absolutely NO noise from the raging gale outside. The staff are charming and very attentive and friendly contrary to the Sofitel.

I am writing to offer our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience you experienced during your recent stay at the Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco & Spa, especially regarding your request for a manager on two separate occasions. I am truly sorry that the weather conditions and the emergency situation we were dealing with due to the extreme weather factors experienced last Saturday meant that our on-duty manager (Housekeeping Manager) was attending to complex situations at that time. I understand that she was eventually able to meet with you. Thank you for your comment regarding the room and the wind noise. It is true that this room was very exposed to the storm, and given the high occupancy on Saturday, the reception team was able to offer you a room with less exposure. In any case, since yesterday, Sunday, now that the storm has passed, our maintenance team has inspected each window to repair any latches and seals that were insufficient during the storm. We apologize for this. Unfortunately, due to the style of our building and the lack of adjacent buildings, our property is more exposed to the effects of exceptional storms like this one. Regarding the service and the missed opportunity on our part, your reservation was entered into our system on Saturday morning, a couple of hours before your 11:00 AM arrival at the hotel. We were unaware of your long flight, and although we handed over the room early, breakfast was no longer available. I imagine that arriving in Montevideo after a 23-hour flight and in tornado-like conditions was not the best impression we could have made. I am truly sorry. Finally, we are very pleased that our sister hotel, the MGallery Costanero, was a more welcoming alternative for you in this situation, and that their staff, already aware of your experience here, contributed to your well-being. I remain at your complete disposal, and I am sure that in another setting you will be able to enjoy our facilities and the type of service we typically provide to our guests even more. We appreciate you bringing this matter to our attention, as it helps us to improve. If you wish to discuss this issue further, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. Beautiful Architecture and Great Stay by the Rambla

I recently stayed at this hotel in Montevideo and was genuinely impressed by its beautifully designed, architecturally remarkable building right on the Rambla. The entrance hall is stunning, and the rooms are exactly what you would expect from a five-star property: comfortable, elegant, and well equipped. Breakfast was good, though not outstanding. The only surprising flaw was that my room had a chocolate wrapper and a small plastic ball left behind by the previous guests—items that were clearly overlooked during cleaning. Apart from this isolated incident, the overall cleanliness was excellent. One important point: the hotel is located about 30–45 minutes from the city center, depending on traffic. Had I known this in advance, I might have chosen a different five-star hotel downtown. But if the distance doesn’t bother you, this is a wonderful place to stay and easy to recommend.

I’m baffled that the Sofitel in Montevideo carries the same name as the brand I’ve trusted for years. The front desk staff set the tone right away with curt, condescending service that made check-in feel like an inconvenience to them. Housekeeping wasn’t any better; requests went unanswered, and the team seemed impossible to reach. Breakfast was the final frustration. The staff spent more time chatting with one another than paying attention to guests, leaving tables waiting while they caught up with their coworkers. This “grand dame” of Montevideo may have a storied past, but it’s coasting on old reputation. The current service level is nowhere near what travelers expect from Sofitel, and it shows at every turn. I wouldn’t return.

A beautiful hotel & restaurant on the water . The service is impeccable & our morning waiter Garcia, was very attentive.the buffet has fresh fruit , juices, coffee, eggs, desserts, meats, , everything you need & if they don’t have it Garcia will bring it .

What an amazing stay at this historic hotel!

Our room was excellent and had a great view! The restaurant at the hotel was simply amazing! The front desk assistance was top notch! Specifically, thanks Chiara for arranging our dinners, a tango show and excursions! Looking forward to a return visit!
