A very well appointed hotel with large rooms - the bath tub even boasts its own TV screen. Centrally located, there are several underground walkways to access nearby streets. There are well equipped fitness facilities. The gym is in a converted ballroom with no floor padding - take care when dropping weights on the floor. You'll need a swim cap to use the indoor swimming pool and use the complimentary slippers entering the deck. A very extensive breakfast buffet is available dominated by Chinese favorites. It can get quite crowded especially if the hotel is hosting a conference. Overall not a bad place to acclimate at +7,000' elevation before entering Tibet.

As repeat guests each time we stay at Sofitel Xining we are further impressed. Two weeks extended to three weeks this time. Beyond the lovely hotel in a downtown location near great parks and shopping, wonderful, clean, comfortable rooms and excellent food are the staff. Sofitel brings on board and retains amazing people. Eva and Mark at the front desk always take great care of us on our booking, extensions, and ensuring all is well, and there is Tiffany, on the Club level, who with a heart of gold exceeds every expectation of guest care. We will certainly be going back.

This hotel was Perfect. I had a lovely room and the Restaurant is excellent with a wonderful buffet or an a la carte menu. A very big Thank You to Amy Guo in the restaurant, who always made sure I had everything I needed, as I do not speak Chinese.

The Xining Sofitel is doubtless the best place to stay in Xining. It has plenty of French style and is well kept. The rooms are spacious, comfortably furnished and very clean. Staff are welcoming and competent, and are always available to deal with any issue. The hotel restaurants are good choices for dining. So many Chinese hotels advertise several restaurants, most of which are closed when you stay. However, these restaurants are all open. The main buffet offers a wide range of dishes, the fresh fish and the Xining-brewed beer are a delight. The "Nord Ouest", comme son nom l'indique, serves tasty recipes from the Chinese north-west (no pork!), but the reception staff will not be able to tell you where the restaurant is if you use its French name! There is a very pleasant, well-stocked bar. Contact the concierge in advance and they will be able to arrange private transport to the Qing Hai Lake (China's largest lake at an altitude of 3100 metres) and the Chaka Salt Lake (amazing and an absolute must if you are visiting Xining; expect a long day out - 7am to 7pm; take sunscreen). Only one disadvantage: the television is horrendously complicated to operate, in particular if you cannot read the Chinese on the remote-control; perhaps the supply of English-language instructions would help. Also, the WiFi can be slow, or even break down. All in all, a very pleasant stay. Excellent location. Good sleep.

'The staff was amazing, but the room design needs to improve' I stayed here after being stranded in Xining due to a flight delay. I started getting breathing issues after I got off the airplane in Xining. The high altitude sickness hit me... The staff was wonderful in making me feel comfortable. They provided me with oxygen and lots of water. Especially Kyleli Li Yuan was especially wonderful and Bruce at the front desk did an outstanding job! My body was physically sick and the room design did not help. The room I got was a suite, and it was so huge. In front of the bed, there was a sofa. The distance between the bed and the sofa was more than 4 meters. Normally I do not pay attention to it, but because I felt sick, it felt like someone was sitting on the couch watching me sleep... I would recommend the Sofitel in Xining to rethink their room designs to make it more comfortable.
