Had the best time here, dog friendly, room was lovey and the bed was so comfy. Ideal location for us and the food here was lovey. All staff were so welcoming

The Mercure is shown as a 4 star hotel , some parts are excellent but other parts really let it down . Stayed for 4 nights while working in York. Room 213 first night , had to swap as droning noise from hotel air con went off every 10 minutes and got no sleep at all . New room for rest of week , better . The staff were all excellent and very helpful during my stay . Highlight was the quality of the food in the restaurant, very tasty and varied menu ( see pics ) Lowlight was the rooms , looking very tired and unloved . Basic amenities and definitely need updating ASAP. Gaz

2 night stay totally spoiled by live music until after 1.30am the first night. (Jan 2026) To be same until midnight tonight. Said at reception this morning I was woken and kept awake. “I understand” the receptionist said. It’s just not acceptable that paying guests are affected in this way at that time if the morning with some planned event in the main foyer on entering the hotel. We stay here frequently to visit family. I will be searching for alternative accommodation unless the hotel manger has some kind of proper apology to offer.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and please accept our sincere apologies for the disturbance you experienced during your stay. We fully understand how unacceptable it is to have your rest disrupted by late-night noise, particularly when you are a paying guest expecting a comfortable and peaceful stay. We’re very sorry that the live music continued into the early hours and that this was not communicated clearly in advance. While we appreciate your patience in raising the matter with reception, we regret that your concerns were not addressed more effectively at the time. As a hotel frequently used by guests visiting family, we are disappointed to hear that this experience has affected your confidence in staying with us again. Your comments have been escalated to hotel management, who will review this matter carefully and ensure appropriate action is taken. Thank you for your honest feedback, and we hope to have the opportunity to restore your faith in us.

Just stopped at the Mercure for a relaxing weekend and got exactly that. It’s a grand old building. A little bit tired in places but non the less had a lovely stay. Room was a good size and I’d certainly go again

Two weeks on and I am still waiting for the manager to contact me to discuss my concerns as I was assured by the receptionist, but to no avail so here goes.. I originally booked to stay at the hotel over new year months ago. I assumed there would be entertainment on. Imagine my surprise when I got there to learn that there was but it was £99 a head and all booked up. Why weren't guests staying there who had booked way in advance notified of this event and given first choice. As I wasn't well enough to go out into town I stayed in my room on my own. I asked a few times if I could perhaps join the event after 10pm after the meal but was told no as it was a private event. Pretty poor since I had booked to celebrate the new year there. Three times I had to go back downstairs as my electronic key fob did not work, to get it re-activated and it had been nowhere near my phone I was advised that can make them go faulty sometimes. This was awkward as although there was a lift I was right round the other end of the hotel so it was as much hassle just to take the stairs as walk all the way round. I have mobility issues so this was a real hassle, as the phone also did not work in the room. It also rang twice on another occasion but when I picked it up whoever was on the other end could not hear me. So when I wanted to ring downstairs I had to contact the national number from my mobile, and ask to be put through to the main desk, only top be waiting ages so gave up in the end and had to make the trek downstairs to reception to queue behind other guests checking in. I also wonder if the room had been cleaned properly as there was paper on the floor and a leaf on top of the radiator when I arrived I stayed three nights. The first morning my room wasn't cleaned one of the days then the next day it was quarter to 4 in the afternoon when they finally came round as it should have been ready. Twice I had to go down the second day just to make sure I had not been missed again, as it was so late. It should have been ready for at least 3pm. One of the cleaners told me that they had halved the number of staff, despite there being the same number of guests in an attempt to save money as they had to pay them time and a half, but the new owners were too penny pinching. A reasonable request for New Years day me thinks to pay staff a decent wage. As another guests noted the rooms were ok but looked tired. Please see attached photos. The view from the back was uninspiring, dirty with all leaves and debris built up.. The handwash in the bathroom was cheap and I got a terrible rash from it. I complained to various different people at various times, including managers but to no avail. All in all it was a lonely and miserable experience being shut away on the top floor, I hardly slept through being ill and being awoken with a start in the middle of the night by a someone having an argument and slamming doors. I would appreciate a proper and fully considered response with a reasonable reply. There is also the matter of me phoning up several times and trying to upgrade my room as I was unable to do it through Booking.com. It said contact the venue. After several attempts, no one got back to me to resolve the issue. On one occasion I was asked to call back as they were too busy, not 'I will take your contact details and get someone to call you'. Very poor customer service and communication is an issue as the staff and those manning the phones do not speak English very well

Accommodation reservations do not include access to such events, and availability was fully allocated prior to your arrival. Unfortunately, we were unable to accommodate requests to join the event once fully booked. Your reservation was for a standard single room, which is lift accessible. Any expectations regarding entertainment, room upgrades, or special arrangements would have required prior confirmation with the hotel. We acknowledge the inconvenience caused by the room key reactivations and the reported telephone issue. We hope that assistance was provided when these matters were raised with the team. We regret that the overall experience did not align with your expectations and encourage guests with specific requirements or concerns to contact the hotel in advance so these can be discussed and managed appropriately.
