The Ibis with a Novotel Breakfast Commute

I recently stayed at the Ibis Manchester Centre on Portland Street, a hotel I haven't visited in several years. While the interior upon arrival is quite modern and appealing, I found this to be somewhat deceptive, acting as "smoke and mirrors" for the reality of the bedrooms. The rooms are due a facelift. While the space was adequate for a single overnight stay, I would be reluctant to book an extended trip here. The general condition of the corridors was drab, grey and uninviting. A concern was the small bathroom (which strongly resembled a unit you might find on a train). Disturbingly, there was a noticeable whiff of raw sewage that could be detected from within which was unpleasant and unhygienic. Breakfast arrangements are notably awkward. Due to heave rain, I had to run there and back across an open courtyard at the back of the hotel to access the Novotel next door, which hosts the breakfast service. The breakfast itself at the Novotel was adequate, providing standard fare. Cooked food was missing a few items and needed a prompt from another guest to have addressed. There was a distinct lack of customer service with a smile from the staff, making the start of the day less welcoming. Was it good value, no I dont think so.

Card details taken upon arrival and used to buy items online a few hours later , absolute joke. Hotel itself is fine and location is central but would not recommend , there is better hotels for the asking price with the added bonus of not having your credit card details stolen.

The room was well a little tired . The bed well in all fairness I think sleeping on the floor would have been comfier . Staff were friendly but at same had no tv although they tried had no Internet connection . Breakfast was not great the bacon oh my word knife no chainsaw needed to cut through it wifi well was hit and miss would I visit again probably not maybe worth spending a few pounds more .

Such a warm welcome, two cheery guys on reception were helpful and efficient Our room on the third floor was to the standard we expect from Ibis. Clean, enough room for a few nights stay and it had an opening window The room was serviced each day, a feature some hotels now limit. Breakfast was included for us but well worth the £15 if you pay separately. It was, however next door in the Novatel, out of the back door of Ibis and 100yards along, ok in the fine weather but not so good if it is raining. Excellent breakfast buffet was provided, well stocked and full of variety. An efficient set up . It was good to see the lack of pre packaged food on offer, no foil wrapped butter (pats cut and on platter, or plastic tubs of marmalade, dispensers for all preserves.

Room satisfactory, very comfortable bed. Lovely hot shower. Breakfast was very mediocre. Continental selection was very good. However, I opted for a hot breakfast from the hot buffet (squally showers outside !). The scrambled egg was dry, hash browns were soggy and the sausages were not browned, looked very anaemic. The bacon was well cooked and spot on for me. Our stay was comfortable and conveniently placed for the AO Arena.
